It will soon be 39 years since the last US military presence left Viet-Nam on April 29,1975. The unforgettable images of that last chopper out remain indelibly with us.

Since then, a lot of fine films have come along showing the heroism, the brutality, and the heartbreak of our long 14 year ,at least, stay.
The war defined a generation and still resonates with us today.

Let us know which of these films reached out and touched you.

Listed in alphabetical order.

there was some phenomenal films on the list. i just couldn't pick one

one i would add though would have been "We were soldiers and we were young"

My choice is The Deer Hunter. De Niro, Walken and Cazale are marvelous. A great supporting cast . The opening 51 minute wedding scene set in Clairton, Pennsylvania, is grotesque and hilarious at the same time. The second act in Viet-Nam is unforgettable. Chilling and riveting every moment. The finale is never to be forgotten.

Robert De Niro shows again why he is the greatest actor of the last 40 years ,IMO.Great presence ,charisma and magnetism. The Godfather II, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull,GoodFellas,Bang the Drum Slowly,The King of Comedy,Cape Fear, The Untouchables,Once Upon a Time in America,Casino and so many more. What a resume.

I Don't watch them.

I gotta agree with that statement, although I used to like "Tour Of Duty" on television. I dunno; memories have dulled a bit since then; maybe I could watch them now. The only one I ever saw on that list was "Good Morning, Vietnam," and that was by accident.

A good buddy of mine was a rifleman in the nam. He said that hands down Platoon was the most realistic. He was impressed with the reality brought out in the final combat scenes. In particular when one of the guys in a foxhole pulled his dead buddy over top of him to make the nva think all were dead. My pal has a "thousand yard stare". He doesn't like talking about that part of his life.

The movie Platoon was the closest to what I experienced when I served in Viet Nam as an Infantryman with the Americal Div in 1969.

The gunny Sgt. in full metal jacket, R. Lee Emery wasn't the first one they wanted for the part, he was a walk on and had submitted a video with about an hour of various Marine Corp's boot camp DI verbal rant's and after they saw the video they knew they had the right guy for the movie, he had never been in anything prior to that and as they say, everything went down hill from there for him.
