Best storage place for home protection shotgun?

I need some advice about the best place to keep a weapon in my home for protection. It seems to me that a pump action, 12 gauge shotgun, with a 28” barrel, and holding five rounds of #00 buckshot with eight 0.32” pellets per round would be an ideal weapon. My concern is with both the accessibility of the weapon in the event it is ever needed and keeping it secure, especially from our inquisitive 5 year old grandson who visits our home often. Short of toting the gun around the house with me at all times, is there any factual information that would help me decide on the ideal storage place. Our bedroom is not close to either the sliding patio door or the front door. Any suggestions will be most appreciated. Many thanks for any help.

If you have a five year old running around your house the ideal place to store your gun is in a safe

If I kept the shotgun in a safe, doesn't that mean it won't be readily available for use if, GF, the need arises? That is my dilemma.

And even if it is in a safe, where should the safe be located? I can't afford to put one by each exterior door. Does anyone know how long it takes to open the various kinds of safes in an emergency situation? There must be stats about that somewhere.

I am checking to see how long it takes me to get to various places in my house from different locations if the need arises so I'll be able to logically and scientifically determine what defence plan to develop and put in place. I certainly don't want to be making things up in the midst of a crisis.

The bottom line is that any defense weapon needs to be quickly accessible to keep the bad guys at bay but secured from anyone who does not not know how to handle it safely and correctly. NRA doesn't have any specific info about this so please HELP!!!!

Just keep one thing in mind. It’s the sound of that slide racking that is the desired method of sending intruders scurrying. It’s far safer sitting back in your corner waiting than going on an armed exploration towards whatever noise got your attention. The sound of that slide going back and forth is so loud in a quiet place it will assure they’ll never even think of coming towards the sound.
That’s why I like mine clicked off on an empty chamber and left on fire. Then all you need to do is make that very loud noise and keep your finger off that trigger while you cover that door and dial 911.
Just make very sure to safety ( if you haven’t already) and set that weapon down when the police arrive for obvious reasons.
No kids around I’d just stash it in a bedroom closet way up high and out of sight . Something like a top shelf under clothes right where you sleep, something along that line. If there’s a possibility of kids about mount it on a closet wall in one of those locking devices. Leave it as I said above.
Just be sure to set that combo so you can do it in the dark . If you use a light to see it you’ll trash your night vision at a potentially very dangerous time. If it has some sort of luminescent or easy access backlight so much the better.
There’s no hard and fast rules to these things. It’s more a series of considerations . The big ones are kids and adults with addictions , mental illness, anger issues ect. If you have any of the last three about you’re likely safer without one at all. That’s my 2 cents worth.

I used a 1 by 3 with 2 wood dowels sticking out of it and mounted on the wall above the bedroom walk in closet. The only time you see it is when you look up. I'm 5'10" and I don't have a problem reaching it.
