Best set-up for home defense?

IMO I believe three guns will give you excellent home defense. Keep a good shotgun ready, loaded with 00 Buck. A good pocket pistol you can just drop in a pocket to have with you. And also a good revolver or pistol a little larger. If you live in an area with bears, cougars, wolves, etc. the shotgun can come in real handy. Myself I simply use my Bersa Thunder .32 acp and my Kel Tec P-32 for home and carry. But if I lived in a wilderness area would also own a shotgun.

Three guns will protect your home very well. :victory:

Home protection has about a zillion things one must do before relying on a gun. Making the home and property unfriendly to intruders is first. But it doesn't apply to those darn black bears. We've had a drought for the past month and there seems to be a lot of juveniles foraging.

I live out in the country and go hunting. I have a 9mm pistol for carry (2 Holsters), several 12ga. shot guns and a rifle w/scope. Probably all I will ever need.

Here we go again with "gun control Conrad"!
This boy must have stock in .32 acp as it seems to be the only caliber he espouses for carry..

Conrad, there may be some new blood on this site but us Older blood will make sure they are aware of your true nature.

No discussion of exterior or interior lights? Landscaping? Fences? Gate and door locks? Dogs? Alarms? Practice? Night shooting? Gun lights and/or gun lasers? There's so many things that make up home defense and these are just on the top of my head as a novice.

Exactly.

I just keep my handgun on the night stand.

As the saying goes "everyone has a plan until they're punched in the face", so I don't bother making detailed plans.

shotties are probably the best bet for home defense, consider bird shot instead of 00

8 rounds of Remington Express #4 Buckshot out of a semi-auto shotgun for me:

Federal Premium #1 Buckshot with Flight Control is also a good option if you need to keep the pattern tight:

I understand the birdshot motivation. #4 and #1 buckshot will pass through 3 interior walls. In contrast, birdshot passes through only 1. Buckshot is certainly still deadly after passing through 1, while birdshot is simply not. For comparison, 9mm passes through 4 walls and .45 ACP through 3.

Now why would anyone need have all that has been offered as home defense?

We have been assured by the libs and the anti's all we need is a phone and call 911!!!

I had a shotgun (12 gauge) loaded with two rounds of rubber slugs and three rounds of 00 buck. I gave up on that because in order to secure it reasonably (I won't just throw a loaded gun under the bed) precludes me from getting rapid access to it. I keep a loaded pistol in a small "safe" in the nightstand. If I need to go fend off large non-human vermin, I've got time to load the shotgun. Most of the time I just keep #2 birdshot handy. I need to blow away the blasted groundhogs from my wife's garden.

Apologize if repeating. Did not look at all replies but wanted to add my 2 cents. Besides the firearms, be them pistols, revolvers and or shotguns, I do the following.
1. I lock and secure with stopper my bedroom door and will not leave same. Anything in any other room is insured and replaceable--I am insured and not replaceable. Just not worth it to me. No one in my house but my wife and I so clearing rest of house is moot.
2. Have cellphone at the ready to call 911
3. Have remote garage door opener at the ready
4. Have remote car alarms at the ready
5. Have a preferred setup location in bedroom with view of bedroom door
You defeat my bedroom door my only concern after that is replacing the door and the carpet. Whoever defeated my bedroom door is not my concern and it probably does not matter anymore. I am not a sheep. Someone will go to hell before I go to heaven.

Sounds like you spend your whole life in your bedroom. What happens to your carfully laid out plan when burglers come while your making dinner, taking a shower or watching TV in the livingroom?

As I said, everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.

The very first thing to look at regarding a setup is lighting. It's amazing how simple a thing deterrs so much crime. Walkway lights, a soft padio light and a few motion detector controled lights go a long way. Add a couple indoor lights onto the circuit controled by a motion detector. Have a light on your gun.

Follow that up with a few good locks. Add an inexpensive alarm system. After that, issue a loud verbal warning. As others have said, accepting a level of theft can keep you from having to justify your gunshots to a jury. Insure your stuff, lock yourself in a room, call the cops, later make a claim for the stolen items. And if the bad guy does come through the door and if you do shoot, it'll look better on you in front of the jury. Be sure to render first aid on anyone you have to shoot, too, as that will look good on you also.

Threads like these make people think you can just grab your gun and open fire. That's a good way to land in prison.

carrying on my person works well for me

I have cameras too. Signs around the ground for ADT Security and video. They won't stop someone intent on killing you but they are a deterrent for the average little punk burglar. The kid that breaks-in while everyone is at work has to know he's on video. Hopefully he picks another house. A good dog is a better option. I have a GSD who doesn't like too many people. He's trained to defend the family as well. He won't stop someone bent on harming you as they'll shoot him, but once again he's a good deterrent for the average unarmed burglar. Despite all these things a person bent on murder won't be deterred. And anyone who penetrates all that low-level security isn't there to use your phone. In those cases the last resort has been reached. Use any and all defenses available.

I rely on my long arms for home defense. I rely on my sidearms for away from home. 12 gauge combat pump shotgun with 00 buck for my wife, AR 15 for me. If attacked by multiple home intruders, we are prepared. Obama and his minions illegal efforts to ban the best semi automatic long arm ever designed is a political gimmick. The idiocy of his actions along with using the criminal alphabet soup agencies to carry out his socialist, communist agenda shows exactly where his priorities lay.
