Best answer when asked why I carry?

Because when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

I have deep, profound respect for the men in blue. But the old cliche is true.

When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

You could tell them why you don't carry.

I don't carry a gun to kill people, I carry a gun to keep from being killed.

I don't carry a gun to scare people, I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place.

I don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid, I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I'm evil, I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I hate the government, I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.

I don't carry a gun because I'm angry, I carry a gun so that I don't have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.

I don't carry a gun because I want to shoot someone, I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don't carry a gun because I'm a cowboy, I carry a gun because, when I die and go to heaven, I want to be a cowboy.

I don't carry a gun to make me feel like a man, I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.

I don't carry a gun because I feel inadequate, I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.

I don't carry a gun because I love it, I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.

Police Protection is an oxymoron. Free citizens must protect themselves. Police do not protect you from crime, they usually just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.

Personally, I carry a gun because I'm too young to die and too old to take a butt whoopin!

Unfortunately my wife has some of the same attitude of "why do you carry". Hopefully when she gets her gun, yes she wants one, she will understand the safety factor it brings. Not that you are safe from being attacked and hurt or killed, but you damn sure have a better chance...IF it happens. I hope like hell I am never put in the situation.

I carry because you never know what could happen to you on a day to day basis. I WANT to be able to make the decision whether I live or die in a confrontation, not that decision being made for me. I will fight to the end and a firearm is a great tool to have in your personal defense arsenal.

I don't shoot to kill, I shoot to stay alive. If you think about it, if you have a situation that is so bad that you have to draw your gun. What are the chances that you'll be allowed to call 911? I'd call 9mm!

My usual answer is

"Peace through Strength. It works for individuals just like it works for governments."

"Why are you carrying that gun?"

"I think the far more important question is: Why aren't you?"

The fire extinguisher, seat belt and spare tire analogies work well also.

I consider my weapon a life insurance policy that I hope I never have to cash in on. (But it IS comforting, all the same.)

Because a cop is too heavy to carry around all the time.

I laughed out loud when I first read this but the more I thought about it, the more sense it makes. Just where was a cop when you last needed one the most? I'll bet he/she were at best, minutes away... a major crime only takes seconds.

"Because there are people in this world so evil that they would kill you and do things to your daughter that make most people vomit. Because law enforcement don't get to these incidents 93% of the time until it's too late. Because we live in the only country in the World that allows us to not be a victim to these evil people. And finally, because I don't believe you, your family, me, or my family deserves to be victimized.

Care to play through?" <<Big smile>>
