Beretta storm .40

I carry a storm .40 everyday but something like that is too big for my wife. Anyone familiar with the sub compact version for concealed carry?

Well I don't have any personal experience with the 40 Sub-compact but do own a Sub-compact 9mm and must say it's a rather nice shooting gun. My only grip is it tends to shoot a little low but does hold tight groups. Recoil is easily manageable as well.

Also just wanted to mention the capacity of the gun is outstanding and the snap-grip pinkie extension helps grip tremendously. The only difference between the full-size and sub-compact (other than barrel and grip length) is the subcompact operates on a tilt-barrel system instead of the Full Size and Compacts rotary barrel.

I have been playing with a couple storms at my local gun shop thinking about buying the full-sized 9mm for a bedside gun. I like the way it feels in my hands and was wondering how it shoots.

The storm shoots great. very low recoil and a pleasure to shoot. I took my wife to the range for her first time and she shot the x out of the bulls eye in her first two shots. She is a little intimidated because of it's size, which is why i'm considering getting the sub-compact storm for her. Probably in a 9mm instead of a .40

I have three Storms - the PX4 9mm, CX4 9mm, and the PX4 9mm sub-compact. The two pistols conceal well with a Crossbreed IWB holster. The Super Tuck model with a single belt clip works well with the sub-compact. Both pistols are the F model which is DA/SA. The PX4 is accurate, reliable, and has relatively little recoil in 9mm. Holds a 17 or 20 round magazine. The 9mm sub-compact version comes with two 13-round magazines, one with a fold-down base giving you room for another finger. Weapon is relatively light even when loaded. I do find the sub-compact less accurate with a 3" barrel compared to the 4" full size 9mm. Both are accurate at 21 feet and closer, with the full size shooting better at longer ranges. The CX4 is the carbine. I put a front grip and a cheap red dot scope on mine. It uses a 17 or 20 round magazine. For $50-60, if you have the military F92 version of the Beretta you can get a magazine insert that allows you to use the F92 magazines, including a 30 round version in the CX4. Accuracy standing with the red dot at 100 yards is about a 3" radius circle. The subcompact can use the 17 and 20 round magazines along with the 13 round ones. I carry a 13 round magazine in the weapon. I carry a 17 or 20 round spare magazine in a belt mag holder along with a separate light in its holder on the left, pistol on the right. All three can be concealed under a T-shirt. The spare magazine may show some but you can show the light is making the bulge. The pistol doesn't show. The Carbine uses the same 17 round and 20 round magazines as the PX4 Storm. The larger magazines do protrude from the bottom of the subcompact but don't affect its function.
I would definitely recommend it over a pocket 9mm. It makes a good summer carry gun and for a woman a good year-round carry gun. I usually try and carry the full size PX4 in the winter where I have more clothing on to conceal it and its larger size makes it easier to handle, especially if I am wearing gloves.

Might want to try the sub-compact first at the range because from what I understand, it doesn't include the rotating barrel that the full size and compact models have.

That is true. The full size pistol has a rotating barrel that reduces recoil. The sub-compact barrel slides back and down. I think a .40 would be too much recoil but the 9mm I can handle one handed. I would think a woman should have no problem 2-handed.

DA/SA. New gun the DA action is a bit stiff. This loosens up after 200 rounds but on a new gun it is noticeable. Trigger moves 3/4 of an inch with 1/2 inch of tension until hammer release in DA, then moves 3/4 inch forward to re-set in DA. In single action the trigger starts 1/4 inch farther back, moves 1/4 inch and then has 1/4 inch of tension until hammer release. It then moves 1/4 inch forward to re-set in SA. Trigger pull in pounds I don't know. Very easy in SA. DA is more than a .40 cal Springfield XD SA only, but not much.

You might want to check out Beretta's new gun that is coming out. It is the Beretta Nano. It is marketed as a pocket pistol and is available in 9mm. A .40 version will be coming out later. It seems to take many styling and function cues from the PX4 line. I guess the internal components are the serialized part meaning, that you may have options down the line to drop your inner workings into a different frame or something. They haven't said much about that yet.
