MACON COUNTY, N.C. -- The Macon County sheriff said the armed suspects found on a school's campus said they would have started shooting students or teachers if it was "God's will."
Sheriff Robert Holland said during a press conference on Friday that during interviews with Adam Conley, 38, and Kathryn Jeter, 29, one of the suspects made a statement they were on the South Macon Elementary School campus because it was "God's will" and it was "part of the Matrix."
Holland says Conley and Jeter were arrested on the school's campus on Thursday morning after pulling a gun on a deputy and refusing the drop the weapon.
A cat was also found shot and stabbed on the school's campus. Holland said when they later questioned the suspects, one of them said the cat was "defective."
