Background check not NICS?

It says that there is a background check in Florida to get a carry and conceal permit. I'm from new jersey and I'm 27 years old. I have a felony on my record from almost ten years ago. I was still in high school and threw one punch and knocked the kid out. Now I'm paying for it cause now that I'm older and trying to buy a home in new jersey they would never give me a firearms Id card to protect myself in my own home. I have had no trouble with the law since 2003 besides some speeding/parking tickets. Could someone tell me what NICS background check is? I'm only looking for a firearms id, I don't feel the need to carry a gun outside my home. And I can't even hunt because of this stupid felony from almost ten years ago. Most of my family hunts and I can't go with them because of it. Someone please help. Thank you.

What good is a Florida CCW permit going to do for you in New Jersey? By the way, a felony conviction prohibits you from possessing a firearm or ammunition at the Federal level.

While Florida may only do a state background check, when purchasing a gun the background is done through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). This is through the FBI. A felon is not allowed to purchase a hand gun, nor be in possession of a hand gun. If you are a felon, no matter how long ago the felony was committed, you are UNABLE TO BE IN POSSESSION OF A FIREARM, PERIOD. If I were you, I'd find out what other options (like a baseball bat) you have available and keep firearms far out of your mind. Also, I would make sure that your friends aren't carrying while you are around, lest you get in trouble for that.

I was really just looking for what a non NICS background check was. Thought maybe they didn't go back as far as others. I know people are able to get non resident firearms id's and I was hoping I could and that would be enough to have a gun in my home without getting a nj id. But I guess not considering your reply. Thanks.

Hire a lawyer and have the conviction expunged from your record and your rights restored. Then you can get the New Jersey FID and be legal. New Jersey does not recognize any other states' firearms permits for anything. You would not qualify for a Florida non-resident license anyway...it's going to ask right on the application "have you ever been convicted of a felony". Any application to purchase any firearm from a licensed dealer is also going to ask the same question.

Once the court expunges your record and restores your rights, then and only then can you answer "no" to those questions, legally and truthfully.

Seems as if everyone who has posted on this thinks they're better than I. As if you never got into a high school fight. Thanks for the info though, pricks.

I would rather be a prick than a convicted felon. Seems like your anger problems and mouth are what probably got you into trouble to begin with.

That must be the same mouth that got you into trouble with the law. Stay away from guns

Good advice Navy, it was just one post too early, before we found out who this guy was. I see this is only his fifth post.

Okay first thing first if you were a juvenile when you were arrested and charged you were adjudicated not convicted. Second in new survey there is an youthful offenders law which will allow persons who commit felonies from the age of 18-23 to have their records expunged if the person has completed probation, parole, paid all restitution and has remained out of trouble 7-10 years after the final disposition of his charges. IE released from prison, discharged from probation or parole. Good luck.

Oh I got into fights plenty in school. More than I can remember or count. I didn't see one "prick reply", they all said about the same thing.....felony is a federal level not state level. You can get it expunged. Maybe follow advice and keep your cool. If you get that pissy about an "off color" comment. You definately don't need to carry a gun. Now, count to ten and think about it all.

Would love to pig pile in the thread, but all I could do would be to agree with all that has posted a reply to the original question. But, lets all agree that there is truly on one real prick in this thread. He's the one pointing the finger at others, but fails to see the other three fingers on his hand pointing back at himself. :)

Maybe that is because his foreskin is covering his eyes?

He guy that started this guess what I am aloud to have weapons and have my ccw glad I do sucks you can't and I one hit knocked a kid out when I was 17 don't talk **** to people man you sound arrogant ....

Get the felony conviction expunged. Its going to cost you a bunch of money to hire a good lawyer to do it. Somewhere in the neighborhood of $1500.
As long as you have a felony conviction on your record there is no way you are legally allowed to possess a firearm ANYWHERE in the country.
It is not a state law, its a federal law, countrywide. It sucks to have a felony record, doesn't it? But you already knew that.
So, do yourself a favor and get it taken care of. Try not to be so pissed off about it, its not our fault you are in this predicament, but we are offering
you advice to help you get it fixed the right way so that you may LEGALLY own a firearm.
