AutoZone Fires Employee That Stops Armed Robber with His Own Gun

auto zone "done" . After reading the story I had a part on order. I called them cancelled the order and explained to then why. I also left some nice feedback on their website.

I'm done with AutoZone and they know why.
Companies that restrict carry by employees usually include that restriction in their handbook of rules and they may not necessarily speak about every rule during any orientation process. The company will on the other hand inform the employee that they are responsible for knowing what is in the handbook and usually have them sign an agreement promising to abide by the contents of the handbook. I know the company I worked for took that stand for decades, firing people for violating workrule 9, violation of written company policy. There idea being that if robbed give them what they want to the point of carrying it out to the car for them if they ask. This however doesn't account for those idiots that get everything they want then just start shooting everyone. There is no amount of insurance that is going to protect the employees lives.

the reason a lot of businesses have that policy is because they're trying to avoid lawsuits. whatever inventory and cash a robber might get away is insured or can be written off as a loss. however, if an employee or customer or even the robber get hurt, they can all file lawsuits. since most robberies end without anyone getting hurt as long as the robbers get what they came for, the brass sets the policy that you should just give them what they want and let them go. besides, it's not an employee's job to protect the company's property or enforce laws....

even if I had my gun with me, I wouldn't pull it unless my life was actually in danger. if giving someone a bunch of my employer's stuff that the employer doesn't even care about resolve the situation then great. I probably wouldn't be getting paid enough to put my life on the line to protect someone else's spark plugs. in this case this guy had a KNOWN M. O. as he had robbed 30 stores and was even recognized by the clerk. he had never killed anyone and never even pointed his gun at anyone... he just showed that he had one. the clerk just interfered with the robbery and wasn't able to apprehend the guy who might now get more aggressive.

if I believed for any reason that wasn't going to get out of the situation alive.... that's a different story but knowing the guy just takes some cash and leaves without hurting anyone I'd just let him take whatever he wants.

I'm not saying the employer the employer should be making the decision whether anyone in the store should be armed or not, but they should make it clear that the employees are not cops and it's not their job to stop crimes... CC weapons are for self defense, not for taking the law into your own hands. I think a lot of the reason the clerk was fired had to do with the fact that not only did he confront a robber unnecessarily, but the fact that he got away, got his gun and then returned to the scene to play cop proves he wasn't in any danger.

I'm sure he had the best of intentions, but I disagree with his judgment.

Never ask. They have no right to deny you the means to protect yourself. If you don't ask, it's a non-issue. If you are attacked, you will likely be prepared, win and be fired. You can then sue. Your testimony can be "I was impressed with the manager's character and was justified in the assumption that he would want me to be able to protect myself. No attempt was made by management to inform me of a no-guns policy." You can also get unemployment comp if the firing is unjustified. You pay for it with your taxes, why jeopardize your right to collect it?

Unemployment is tax paid by your employer. It is not a tax paid by you. It is part of your compenstion package for your productivity.

He was fearful of his life so he ran out of the store, grabbed his weapon in his gun, then ran back in...

Batman, da,da,da,da,,da,da,da,,da,da, Batman!

Glad to hear this info as I didn't know where they stand! I am in the automotive business and I can carry at my work and owner likes it! Auto Zone sucks anyway!!

A lot of business's have a policy like that
So you guys are not going to Home Depot I suppose because they have the same policy
As long as there is a no weapons sign and I can carry in there stores
I will visit, At least for a few minutes there will be a Good guy with a carry.

without a training and requal testing program, BETTER than the cops have, would YOU want to be responsible for the actions of HUNDREDS of employees? hmm? Thought not. Any fool, anywhere, can yank out a gun and create a firestorm where there was nothing at risk but a bit of cash, or not even that, if a mistake is made. Bank tellers are told to just pony up the money, why shouldn't Auto Zone or ANY OTHER private business do the same. Do you want people to be able to trespass on YOUR property, ARMED? The sign says don't come here if you are armed, if you do, then you are trespassing. I do go armed anywhere, I don't care about their signs. I'll worry about it if I have to, which is very, very unlikely. The only way my gun is coming out of my pocket is vs the threat of imminent serious harm to me or my loved ones. Everybody else can be armed just like I am. If they choose to be sheeple, and go unarmed, well, that's on them.

..............???

I also work at a corporate business which forbids us carrying a gun while on the job. However, what they don't know won't hurt them. I have carried every single day since I started. I figure the worst they could do is fire me. The worst a crazy criminal do is kill me.

I'd rather take my chances getting fired. At least my wife will have a husband and my kids will have a dad.

Ya know what gundaddy...I agree with your thinking. Concealed is concealed. As long as you've thought it through and can live with the consequences...live being the operative term.
I'd do the same thing.
