Australian gun ownership increasing

DW98 I really feel sorry for the people of Australia. Until they can get legal CCW they will be victims. To not even allow pepper spray is even more ridiculous. The people must rise up and demand CCW to be allowed. Or at least demand all pistols to be allowed. Evidently it will take a few mass shootings before Aussies rise up and demand gun ownership. Because right now it looks like they don't care about gun rights.

And all this ^^ coming from a clown who believes in restricting ownership and outright bans in his own country!
Way to go cluznar.

Lock it, secure it, or lose it

Don't leave firearms unsecured.

Registered owners of firearms in the Geelong, Surf Coast and Colac-Otways police service areas are being warned to familiarise themselves with their licence conditions or risk being prosecuted.

In February this year the Geelong Divisional Firearms office launched ‘Operation 388’ which focuses on firearms regulatory compliance.

The operation came about after an analysis of data by the Geelong Divisional Intelligence Unit, which highlighted the increasing trend of rural burglaries and theft of firearms in the area.

“Effective storage of firearms is imperative to reduce thefts and Operation 388 will focus on inspecting a number of addresses of the nearly 10,000 licence holders residing in the division”, said Leading Senior Constable Anthony Sheedy from the Geelong Divisional Firearms Office.

“Operation 388 is all about conducting firearms licence compliance audits to increase awareness, compliance and enhance public safety”.

The operation has already yielded some astonishing results with 10 licence holders found to be in breach of their obligations and a total of 260 firearms seized.

Any variation from the strict requirements regarding the security and safe storage of firearms and ammunition is an offence and will lead to prosecution, said Leading Senior Constable Sheedy.

“Rural property owners are at greater risk of unwittingly being a source for black market firearms due to a number of factors including inadequate storage practices.

“Our division will be stepping up random inspections over the coming months so my advice to firearms licence holders and dealers in the Geelong and Surf Coast police service areas is – expect a visit.”

Significant penalties apply to licensed firearms holders and dealers which may include the cancellation of their firearms licence together with fines.

Local community assistance is critical and anyone with information about stolen firearms or firearms not being stored correctly is asked to contact their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Timely reporting of firearm thefts is also important so the information can be investigated by police at the earliest opportunity. It is legislated that the owner of a firearm must report it’s theft within a 24 hour period.

The key message we’re trying to communicate with licence holders is that it’s everyone’s responsibility to ensure firearms don’t end up in the wrong hands, said Leading Senior Constable Sheedy.

All rural property owners I know abide by all the laws. And I know plenty of them.

I respect what LE does, and have good friends who were police officers, but it seems they're not targeting the right people or issues (criminals and illegal guns) enough.

Actually, a .32 acp would do well for home owners and CCW in Australia. It will stop a criminal, yet not be such a big caliber as to offend some people. Like the law.
What in the bloody hell is meant by the text in bold print above? Do tell. I appear to be out-of-the-loop here.

I would only use a .32 acp if it was the only thing I could grab. It is a poor CCW choice. Way down the list of my preferred self defense sidearms. YMMV

Appears LE is targeting gun owners instead of criminals and murderers. Mine are always locked-up when I leave, but they are all hot. An empty sidearm makes an awfully expensive rock.

A determined thief is going to get what he is after, unless you own a two-ton-tessy vault. I've got a heavy safe bolted to my slab, but it isn't superman proof. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Have two ammo safes, and another sidearm safe as well. Should keep perps busy for quite some time, before LE arrives, provided they can find anything.

Our safes have to be bolted down unless they weigh more than 150kg, but if someone's determined they could still get into them.

The people of Australia must go to attorney's and ask for a petition to be drawn up and presented to lawmakers. They must ask for new gun laws that will allow aussies better home defense and self protection. If nothing else, maybe ask for pistols of .22 cal on up to .38 special be determined to be allowable handguns for self defense and not needed to be kept unloaded in a safe, but be available, loaded, to owners for self defense. Right now the law is saying "do not use guns to shoot anyone" but criminals do not obey laws. Come on Australia, get some better laws.

I'd like that to be considered, but there's basically 0 chance of that happening. A lot of people don't care enough, and the ones that do are often shafted because of their ideas.
