Aspen May Regulate Doorknobs

DENVER -- The city of Aspen and Pitkin County may tell homeowners what kind of doorknobs to install because of bear break-ins.

Kevin Wright, district wildlife manager for the Colorado Division of Wildlife, recently urged Pitkin County commissioners to amend the local land-use code to mandate round doorknobs, which are far more difficult for bears to open than lever-style doorknobs.

There are some issues with the idea. "The Americans with Disabilities Act requires businesses to have lever action doorknobs," according to Tyler Baskfield, communications manager with the Division of Wildlife.

"At this point, if people are concerned about bears or if they've had issues in past with bears or if they're building a house, they might want to consider having round door knobs on the outside," Baskfield told 7NEWS.

Baskfield said especially in the Aspen area, bears are learning to operate those lever action handles and even in some instances, the bears are learning how to operate car door handles. "But bears can't operate round style doorknobs because they [bears] don't have a thumb," explained Baskfield.

"We have bears that just run around and slap lever handled doorknobs until one opens," said Cindy Houben, head of Pitkin County's Community Development Department.

That's funny!! Are there no locks on the doorknobs in Aspen?

Sooooooo... Let me get this straight...

It's not the fact that there are level-type door knobs on homes and businesses that are the problem...

It's the fact that bears find some that are unlocked that is the problem...

So the government's knee-jerk reaction is... to... what?

I know, let's not put out a civil bulletin to inform all area homeowners and business owners to keep their doors locked at all times when not present... Let's just ban the type of doorknob in question in violation of federal law.

The Liberal mindset will never cease to amaze me, and I hope it never does.

Why the hell not do this? I mean, they tell us what type of toilet we have to use in our own homes...doorknobs aren't surprising.

I guess the people in Aspen should be thankful that they are not being directed to vacate their houses and let the bears have 'em. Fools.

Man that's scary. Bears that know how to operate lever-actions. Wonder if they prefer Winchesters or Marlins?

Does this fall under the right to keep and arm bears?

How many of you keep the doors of your home or business locked while you are inside? I would sure think that if an owner wanted to do a lot of business he would have to go unlock the door every time a customer up. Maybe you keep your doors at home locked but if you have small children that like to go in and out but can't use a key that can get quite annoying.

I would hate to hate to be watching TV in the den and all of a sudden hear a bear walking around my kitchen and from some of the videos on the intelligence of bears I have seen round door knobs may slow them down for a while but they will soon learn or just break the door down.

I've heard of being "loaded for bear" but this is ridiculous. If Yogi opens the front door while I'm in couch potato mode, I'm going to want a slug gun and new underwear.
