Arizona police officer asked not to wear uniform at daughter’s school

Just when we thought we had heard it all.

A police officer who dropped off his daughter at her Phoenix elementary school was asked by the school’s principal not to wear his uniform to the school because other parents were concerned that he was carrying a gun, MyFoxPhoenix.com reported.

Scott Urkov is a police officer for the Coolidge Police Department. The department told him not to comment to media inquiries, but immediately after he received the no-uniform request, he posted on Facebook.

This was mildly interesting from the article:

"Well I was a little surprised," said parent Blaine Spencer. "I think that it's his right to wear that in public. Even if my kids saw that I think they'd feel more protected to see a man in uniform at their school."

Hmm.....So parents still teach that fantasy to their kids, huh? Who'd 'a thunk it in this day and age?

Like you said, just when you think you heard it all. Bad guys and thugs are the only people wanted? SMFH! You have to wonder how these people come up with these kinds of ideas.

Man, I know there's always been stupidity in the world, but it's evolving to a whole new level. At least in AZ, this guy may still get up there and tell it like it is.

I wonder if the school was aware of any other parent carrying? Nahhhhh, they don't care about the gun they don't see or think about, just the one that is supposedly there. :crazy_pilot:

<--- banging my head against my desk repeatedly

Now, if the school had a student who flipped out and was busting people's heads open and the school called the police to cart him away, would they ask them to disarm first???

Stupid

Stupid

Stupid

Aaaaaaargggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

It's like these idiots think a gun is like a poison snake. It might get lose and start killing people. Seriously, they don't want an armed cop at school? And they wonder why schools are "soft targets".

Actually I sent him the following email and I ask that if you have a minute you should too. Here is where you can email him: Link Removed

Dr. Gregory S. Reid's Biography

I was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but moved to California when only a few weeks old. Luckily, I did not receive the pleasure of shoveling snow and walking to school in multiple layers of clothing. I was raised in sunny Mission Viejo, California where the seed for my passion to become an educator was planted through my educational experiences from elementary school through high school. Upon graduation from high school I attended The University of Arizona with Elementary Education as my focus. I taught 5th grade for 3 years in Tucson upon graduating. I then moved to Phoenix to better accomplish a few of my professional and personal goals. While teaching in Chandler, I attended night school through Northern Arizona University for a few years in order to obtain a master's degree in Elementary Education. I then was accepted into Arizona State University's D.E.L.T.A. Doctoral program which focused on educational leadership. Once I earned my doctorate, and, after ten years of being in the classroom, I made the choice to pursue an educational position that would allow me to maintain my passion for teaching and learning, but in a different context; that being in the position of instructional leader.
Here is the email I sent him. Maybe if he gets a few emails he will get the point and maybe learn what it is to be an American....
Dear DR. Reid, I cannot believe that you would even consider asking a law enforcement officer, Who is there to protect you, to disarm and to not wear his uniform. You sir, is exactly what's wrong with our government today. You OWE the public and that officer a heartfelt apology in my opinion. Furthermore, I certainly hope you are not teaching your students that this kind of behavior is acceptable. Questioning authority was and is a basic building block in American history, but nobody including you have the right to tell a Law Enforcement Officer to disarm or not wear his uniform. You really need to take a look at your position and the law before returning to work.
Don't get me wrong and I didn't go into details in the email. I know that if the officer was in the wrong then it would be right to ask or force him to disarm but this situation is exactly what is wrong with our country regarding gun rights. Too many people think that "We" should not own or have access to guns and this is just a tactic by an anti gun nut to send the wrong information about guns.

I'm no fan of the police, but stupid is stupid.

If there was a shooting or hostage situation at that school, I wonder what those imbeciles would say if the cops told them that there'd be a slight delay because they're stopping to take off their uniforms... and locking their guns up in their police cars.

These are UNDOUBTEDLY the same jackasses who don't want armed teachers OR armed cops in the schools.

They have to live with their choices... of course their children might not be able to.

Sounds like.bunch of utopian idiots, then I wonder, Do they have something to hide maybe(illegal)?i mean for God sakes this a police officer dropping g his kid off,and what kind of school official would would even think of asking him to do that much less actually do it. don't know but thank God my wife doesn't work there!!!!!

Insert the word, "police" instead of the word "germans" in the link. This is probably how the principal sees anyone with a gun. I hope he (policeman) comes after eating breakfast. If he takes a bite out of a pop-tart and a teacher thinks it looks like a gun, he will be suspended from "teaching moments" at that school.

I find your reply to be mildly interesting. Why wouldn't the children at school be more protected with an armed police officer present than with nobody armed at all?

I suppose if he was showing up all decked out in SWAT gear, evil AR15 slung over his back, flashbang grenades hanging off his vest - yeah, that might get some comment from the school officials.

But I'm sure that's not the case.

What marooons.

Anyone have an E mail address for this principal or at least an address to send letters to this schools superintendent? I dont really know what to say here. I thought this was America? If I were him, Id wear the uniform to the school anyway.

So heres me taking stupidity to their level. So SAY there is an active shooter at their school, would they like the Police to drop their weapons at the edge of the property and go running in using nice words as weapons? Do they not realize a gun is a useless object until put into the hands of a good or bad person? -snip-

It was intended as a (somewhat) tongue-in-cheek quip about the trustworthiness of cops to be "protectors" as opposed to abusers these days. Just exercising my minority status on this site of thinking most people give cops way more automatic respect than the profession deserves anymore. To me, the very fact that non-cops likewise can't carry in that school, and yet everyone is saying what a stupid thing it is that cops can't either, is proof enough that cops are held in higher esteem by the very people whose rights would be trampled upon if they ever carried into that school and that same cop responded and arrested them after whining on Twitter or FaceBook about being asked to disarm himself. Both the cop and the people who he would arrest for the same "offense" think he holds a higher status in life than the rest of us. I find that a kind of Stockholm Syndrome thought-process.

It's a comment on our rights, not about the cop's gun. I made it admittedly somewhat vague, but I did think at least that much would be obvious.

I did get a response to my email so I thought it would be appropriate to post the principals reply here for you guys/gals to read.

Thank you for sharing your concerns with me. Mesa Public Schools respects and appreciates the contributions of our dedicated law enforcement officers. The media inaccurately portrayed recent events regarding an officer in uniform at Entz Elementary School. The SWAT officer and all police officers are welcome on campus in uniform. The SWAT officer and I were already working together, and are continuing to do so, to educate the school community on the uniqueness of his uniform and position.

Sincerely,

Greg Reid
