Ariz. Sheriff Accuses Gov. of 'Dirty Politics' for Ending Illegal Immigration Contract
Wednesday, May 14, 2008

E-Mail Print Share:

PHOENIX — Gov. Janet Napolitano ordered the state to end an anti-illegal immigration contract with a high-profile sheriff Tuesday so she can pay for a larger effort to track down thousands of felons around Arizona.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Tuesday criticized the governor's decision as a maneuver to thwart his efforts against illegal immigrants.

"Dirty politics are at work right now," Arpaio said at a news conference.

Arpaio, who describes himself as "America's Toughest Sheriff" and is best known for feeding jail inmates green bologna sandwiches, clothing them in pink underwear, and making them work on chain gangs, received praise for his anti-immigration efforts from many who believe the federal government isn't doing enough to remove people in the U.S. illegally.

But his raids and sweeps of illegal immigrants in Phoenix and nearby Guadalupe have drawn protests from community leaders and civil liberties advocates. Arpaio, a Republican, has also been criticized for letting thousands of felony warrants go unserved while he chased illegal immigrants.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, there are about 59,000 outstanding, unserved felony warrants in the state. The majority are in Maricopa County, the state's most populated county.

Napolitano spokeswoman Jeanine L'Ecuyer denied that the Democratic governor was trying to cut into efforts to stop illegal immigration.

"It couldn't be further from the truth," L'Ecuyer said.

Pennie Gillette-Stroud, the DPS chief of the criminal investigations division, said Napolitano's multi-agency task force will focus on violent, repeat criminals as well as undocumented immigrants with felony warrants.

To help pay for the task force, the state Department of Public Safety won't renew a $1.6 million contract with the sheriff's office. That contract ends May 17th, DPS spokesman Bart Graves said.

I'm confused... Joe is trying get rid of illegals, right? and the gov is doing the same thing, right? what did i miss?

You see, Otahyoni, the gov wants to shift efforts to felons instead of illegal immigrants. The Sheriff is not happy about that.
Corrupt officials inside our government want to evade the whole illegal immigrant issue for now. Thier hidden agenda is to unify North America, and it would be 'easier to accept' if there were even more mexicans in America. They allready got Europe, and soon Asia will join in the fun. But alot of Americans are stubborn, and many of us are completely against a continental union, and ultimately, a world government.
So that's why they won't crack down on border hopping, or build the big fence on the border. That's why they're forcing our children to learn Spanish in school. That's why when you call a government office, the first option is to hear in spanish. Not to mention the whole NAFTA crap, and the big highway in Texas (that supposedly doesn't exist.)

So this is just another government puppet doing her job to appease her masters, and a good ol' boy Texas Sherrif is pissed off about it. If you need more info, I would be more than happy. :2:

Cooter you are exactly right. The federal government has become just what Thomas Jefferson and other founding fathers thought it would.

yes it's true.. and unless people start getting busy with doing what they can, then this nafta and these unions will screw us all...

Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been a long time hero of mine, ever since my stint as a Mesa reserve cop. He tells it like it is and believes criminals should be treated like criminals, not hotel guests.

Arpaio's critics accuse him of allowing felony warrants to go unserved while he fights illegal immigration. Well, the reverse would be true if he were to clamp down on unserved felony warrants; the illegal immigration problem would become even more chaotic than it already is. The fact of the matter is that because the sheriff's department does not have unlimited resources at its disposal, it must establish priorities, and in doing so, yes, some problems are put on the backburner.

His critics are correct that his job is to focus on crime and serving felony warrants. However, he would not need to do that if the federal government were doing its job. Because of that, he is forced to devote resources that should be going toward serving felony warrants toward doing the federal government's job, and if you ask me, I believe that federal government should reimburse him for every dollar he spends on that.

Maybe she was at this meeting

Can you believe the nerve of these people? Nine state legislators from the Mexican state of Sonora traveled to Tucson to complain about Arizona's new employer crackdown on illegals from Mexico. It seems many Mexican illegals are now returning to their hometowns and the officials in the Sonora state government are ticked:
A delegation of nine state legislators from Sonora was in Tucson on Tuesday to say Arizona's new employer sanctions law will have a devastating effect on the Mexican state. At a news conference, the legislators said Sonora - Arizona's southern neighbor, made up of mostly small towns - cannot handle the demand for housing, jobs and schools it will face as illegal Mexican workers here return to their hometowns without jobs or money. The law, which took effect Jan.1, punishes employers who knowingly hire individuals who don't have valid legal documents to work in the United States. Penalties include suspension or loss of a business license.
They're pissed off because their own citizens are returning to their hometowns, placing a huge burden on their state government. This lady has some serious balls: They want to tell them how the law will affect Mexican families on both sides of the border 'How can they pass a law like this?' asked Mexican Rep. Leticia Amparano- Gamez, who represents Nogales. 'There is not one person living in Sonora who does not have a friend or relative working in Arizona,' she said in Spanish.
'Mexico is not prepared for this, for the tremendous problems' it will face as more and more Mexicans working in Arizona and sending money to their families return to hometowns in Sonora without jobs, she said. 'We are one family, socially and economically,' she said of the people of Sonora and Arizona.
Wrong. The United States is a sovereign nation and its states and its citizens are not responsible for the welfare of Mexico's citizens. It's time for the Mexican government to stop parasitically feeding off of the United States and start taking care of its own citizens.

The very idea
