AR 15 80 percent lower build

I was thinking about purchasing and building an 80 percent lower. I have been building custom Ar 15 for over 8 years but have never built an 80 percenter. I was going to build it with a simple run of the mill drill press. I wanted to know how yours came out. I also wanted to know if anyone has the measurements for the depths of how far to drill and did you use the measurement dial on the drill press for the depth or did you just mark on the drill bit how far you wanted the depth to be. Any help would be great thank you.

Howdy Jreaper15,

I have thought about building one as well and the only thing that has held me back is the price of..........

The tap for the recoil spring tube/buttstock. It's a 1 3/16" - 18TPI ( I think ) and cost as much as a Stag Arms lower.

Another thing to consider is most 80% lower cost more than a new 100% complete Stag Arms lower.

Things to consider.

I've never seen an 80% that didn't have the threading for the buffer tube.

Stengun the 80 percenters have come a long way. You no longer have to drill/tap the buffer tube threads, they all come with the buffer tube area drilled, and taped just like a finished lower. Also you can find them for a lot cheaper than they used to be if you would like I have a bunch of good brands that you might want to check out. Some are even done in 7075 billet now. I have built over 80 plus AR's from the stripped lower on up some for personal usel/ others under commission. Even if they did cost more than a Finished lower the allure comes from the fact that if any type of government regulation occurred that would force us to register our current Ar's the 80 percent lower would not be included in that category because there is no way to track them. No paperwork, no ffl transfer, no uncle sam involvement. Even if I dont build one right now I am going to purchase one soon before the gov does step in and try and regulate them. So get one now before that ends up being the case. Just my 2 cents on the matter.

After a little "googleing" I have found that most, if not all, 80% lower do have the hole threaded for the buffer tube. Back in the "Day" this was one of the steps that you had to do.

By not having to do this steps saves a lot of time and money.

It's still a cheaper to buy a Stag or other brand of lowers over the cost of an 80% lower but where's the fun and thrill of just buying one off the shelf? Heck, anyone can do that, well, almost anyone.

I'm building a Factory Five Racing Spyder GT in my shop and for what I have invested I could have bought a new Dodge Challenger R/T w/ a Hemi.

As far as Uncle Sam and the paper trail goes, I'm not too worried about that. When Uncle Sam bans guns it will not matter if it's got a paper trail or not because the penalty for possessing a gun will be so high, especially for owning an AR that none of the law abiding citizens will have them.

Back during 95-96 before the 96 election all the "Patriots" at the gun shops and gun shows were claiming that Clinton was going to lose the election by a landslide and that right before the election he was going to declare martial law, call in UN troops from Muslim nations to enforce martial law, and go house to house and confiscate everyone's guns.

This never happened, of course, but this will be what will happen when Uncle Sam bans firearm ownership.
