Anyone Here Into Shooting The .50 BMG Cartridge ?

I picked up this Bushmaster BA-50, .50 BMG rifle last year, and she's been a real performer. I mounted a Bushnell 3200 Elite Tactical 5-15X in Smith Enterprises Rings and 4140 Steel Riser Base. The gun shoots like a dream. The more I look, the more reasonable I'm finding .50 BMG ammo. It's less per round than the .338 Lapua everyone is raving about these days. Personally, I think there is nothing out there that compares to the .50 BMG round. Once you shoot one you'll know what I mean. Yes, it's a hard gun to justify for the expense. Much like a Z0-6 Corvette. But the purchase only happens once, the enjoyment never stops! Bill T.

If I had a place to shoot it and not worry about LEOs or the rd going into the next county, I would have one, ................ any of our local ranges said no way, most of the outdoor ranges around here want nothing bigger than a 300 mag

Unless the U.S. Army is supplying me with the ammo and weapon and a 2,000 meter range it has no use in my personal collection of firearms. At the moment I can't find anymore than a 200-300 meter range. Not long enough to get serious with a .50BMG cartridge.

Don't need the potential collateral damage either if I where in Law Enforcement and attempted to justify the use of the .50 BMG rifle. Theres not an engine block out there that won't take a 12 gauge SABOT slug at 30 meters that I can't disable. Use of force has to be justified with such a large cartridge. Maybe on the border, but it had better be within the ROE of the border Patrol standards.

You get my drift. Fun to shoot, if you know what your doing, but useless in my own personal collection of firearms.

Join FCSA, (.50 Caliber Shooters Association). There are many places to shoot .50's. Most people live closer than they think to ranges and matches. I used all of the excuses for years, same as you guys are doing now. It's like anything else, once you get involved and find others who have done the same, you'll kick yourself for what you've been missing.

The ammo isn't as, and in many cases less expensive, than many of the modern Magnums from Remington and Weatherby. You can buy good dependable .50 BMG ammo for $3.00 a round or less in bulk. Try that with a .300 Remington Ultra Mag, or a .300 Weatherby Magnum. I know because I shoot 3 Weatherby Magnum calibers. Besides, there is nothing more fun you can do with your clothes on! Once you buy and start shooting a .50, you'll realize you've got a miniature gun collection. Bill T.

I've humped, dumped and fired every varient of the .50 BMG in the military. Trained extensively (SOTIC) and used extensively on the battle space.

When you've got to hump one for 25 Kilo's to get to your optimum OP, you'll never want to hump one again. Then when the muzzle blast gives away your position you've got to pack that thing ricky tick and hump under fire to an exfil LZ. Not fun.

I realize civillians are fascinated with big bores, but try humping that baby on your back or in your hands for day's on end. Laying behind it for another few day's waiting on target acquisition and you'll get my drift. Plus, the Barret is much heavier than the Bushy. Add in some .50 ammunition along with your load out. Yeah, it's fun at the range when you don't have to live with it, shit with it, and sleep with it. Didn't like it, just had to do it.

I'll use the money for ammo and another bolt gun build.

None of this even remotely relates to shooting a .50 BMG, or any other weapon for that matter, in a civilian match. I drive to the range with my rifles, then carry them the short distance to the bench. Your scenario has absolutely nothing to do with civilian shooting sports what so ever. .50 caliber or otherwise. Absolutly nothing. BUT the range safety officer will call them if you fire a 50 there, and you will be banned from the range, like I said if I had a safe place to shoot a 50 I would have at least one, I just dont want one bad enough to travel a bunch just to shoot it
