Anyone Heard of this? Small Pistol Primer in 45APC?

golocx4

Got Beretta's?
A guy at my gun club said he heard that a couple of manufacturers are putting SPP in their .45's
He said he read where a guy was reloading and while trying to set his Large Pistol Primer in one of these case it blew up.
Looking for annotation of the story.
Even though my brass is several years old and I have not added any in a long time, I can see how this could become a major issue.

I think Federal is one that comes to mind; I find them all over and try as hard as I can to separate them from the standard .45 ACP brass. They are either an abomination or the smartest thing out in a while. I don't like them but would have to admit that only buying small pistol primers for both 9 and 45 would be fantastic. Not sure if there are issues on how well they work with the wide variety of powders out there and I'm not in any hurry to change out from the old standard but I am saving mine for future use.

As far as it blowing up, if you kept forcing the primer to seat then I could see where it could set it off but at some point, after trying and failing to get the primer to seat with 'proper force' he should have just inspected the case before giving it the beans and ramming it home. I'm seeing more and more SPP .45 brass so be on the lookout and start a habit of checking the head stamps on the brass and you might start catching these; really only going to see these if you shoot at ranges where guys don't police their brass. I shoot IDPA with several guys that buy factory from WalMart and that is when it started to show up.

I also have seen that type of brass showing up at the range I use. Mostly Blazer, I have it polished, and sized and for now
it's sitting waiting for some kind of loading data. It's just one more step in loading. Your going to have to keep it away from the standard brass. As for the guy that blew up a large primer trying to seat it in a small pocket, he better learn more about reloading.

My father reloads these all the time. He uses the same powder charge as the LPP brass and they've all shot fine. I can't tell any difference when the mags are loaded with both.

I found some too

I picked up a few at a local shooting spot the other day. I've seen it several times at different ranges... Not really a problem if you load 9 or 40...which I don't. I did some searches and it seems some folks are using small rifle primers in them. I'm gonna try it..

I found a few in my brass. It was Federal Champion. I did not notice it till my RDP jammed.
After that I have heard of people reloading it with the small pistol primer. Seem ok.
I have to much brass with larger primer pockets, I do not want in mixed in my brass.

I have seen this with winchester NT brass. I looked it up and it turned out it is a non-toxic ammunition made with a small primer pocket. I found a bunch of it off my range the hard way, in my press. I also recently purchased a springfield armory V-16 longslide chambered for both .45acp and .45super. Not being familiar with the super it isn't in any of my manuals but the guy I bought it from I think told me that It too has a small primer pocket. (still checking on that) I also ran into a dealer selling reloads at a florida gun show and he had .45 acp reloaded with spp for sale. It was wincester nt brass. He said it worked fine. I don't see why it wouldn't.
