My wheelbarrow is only rated at four pounds.
So....does this mean that you're a lightweight, can't handle a wheelbarrow anymore, or just that you need to put 10lbs more air in the tire?
Carrying a Desert Eagle is right out of the theater of the absurd. Many obvious factors make it a poor choice as a carry gun and some not so obvious factors do likewise. Sure it's bulky and unwieldy and slow to draw from under a winter coat. Have you practiced drawing from a shoulder holster? Not many ranges will let you do that. What state will the gun be in while you carry it? How well can you manipulate the slide mounted safety with its awkward upward travel?
The 44 is a far better hunting cartridge than defensive cartridge. If you are expecting rifle-like shocking power from the 44 you will be very disappointed. The 44's success in the game fields comes from its penetration and as Elmer said, it kills by punching full-caliber holes all the way through a game animal.
Once you address these questions, you can address the danger posed to innocent bystanders from the excess penetration of the 44. If you do have to use your right of self defense, will one of the myriad of unethical prosecutors try and transform a righteous shooting into a homocide charge because of your choice of weapons? One of the questions asked of the testifying experts at George zimmermans trial was whether he used an appropriate weapon. As one of my colleague's would say "start with the grand jury proceedings and work backwards."
If you don't take your rights seriously enough to get a handgun that's right for the job, do yourself a favor and don't bother carrying.
Well, first off....seems like game on. Not going to down you for your over-opinionated opinion here (even though it seems you'd like to take a serious stab at me over a simple but serious post)....but I'll answer each part of your reply best I can, and I've been carrying (actively every day for the past 12 years).
Now....seems you live in Florida is that correct? You ever have a winter there or wear heavy clothing for the climate?
What "obvious factors" make this a poor choice (exactly) for a CC weapon? Apparently some think the 10mm is a real good choice. Not long ago the rags were touting the 440 Corbon. Just saying.
I have practiced plenty drawing from the shoulder holster. I can do this at home and at the range. I pay a $100 yearly membership to have anytime access, and what I do and how I do it is my business. You're obviously restricted somewhat and haven't been out of the city or to an outdoor range.
Manipulation of the safety? Define "awkward" in your own way please. Easily done many times with my weak hand thumb once grip is attained. Automatic.....train well with what you plan on carrying right? Simple. The DE is not a single handed pistol to operate although I've shot mine strong hand only many times. The weight of it and my strength will only allow about three one handed shots accurately before tiring. It is heavy I'll guarantee you that. Pistol will be cocked and locked just like my single action 45ACP.
I've learned to "expect" nothing while carrying or deploying. Expectations are kind of like waiting for the ketchup to drip out onto your french fries. Expectations get you killed in anticipation of what your adversary will do next. Ask any cop who's been involved in shooting a suspect how many times they shot and what reaction they were looking for each and every shot or if they waited after the first shot to see if the suspect went down. Bordering on the "absurd", and "movie theaters".......they don't always go down with the first shot. Magical bullets and magical guns only exist on the big screen. Real life seldom endows you with a second chance. Your first chance is your best chance.
44mag for hunting? Of course! It's been my carry for a couple of years while hunting deer with my center fire, and the occasional wild boar I run across that wants to escape the same way I came in.
Holes? Larger holes are good from everything I've heard over the past ten years. Blood loss is king rather than shock. Never know when shock will actually take effect especially with someone on high on drugs. Ask some of your law enforcement that have encountered this scenario. Blood loss leads to incapacitation no matter what the nervous system registers. Without blood, you die. Nervous system damage is hit or miss (no pun intended).
Innocent bystanders? Hey! Just like at the range.....ALWAYS be sure of your backstop, your target, and what's beyond. Sound familiar? Same goes for drawing your weapon and your surroundings. Most sane folks are going to disappear once you whoop out the answer to a deranged gunman or your mano e mano confrontation.
Now....all of this is leaving out the remote possibility that your adversary is wearing body armor on the rampage. Remote possibility.....but it's been done many times by the perps. Again....ask law enforcement whom have been involved in these type scenarios.
My choices? Who's exactly regulating what I think for a best possible outcome on survival and my choice of tools to keep on rightfully existing in this world when threatened? You? Your attorneys? The government? If you end up in court or behind bars, this means you're still alive and that you did what needed to be done at the time. So......is life itself worth trading over what someone else thinks, or how you'll face total financial ruin and many years in a penitentiary?
Now.....talk to me about what is an "appropriate" weapon....what your colleagues would say (while never having been in your shoes at the time), and how "seriously" I take my rights and willingness to survive over your thoughts of what my "right for the job" handgun should be, and why or why not I might not take your advice of not carrying at all.
Simply put.....you tell me what's the best for me and how I'm quite possibly a stupid ass for doing what I deem necessary, and I'll hold you accountable from this day forward (my lawyers are getting a copy of this as I'm typing BTW). Your name and address?
As far as doing "favors" for someone else? Consider me doing you a favor awaiting your response instead of outright calling you stupid on the forum. How many of your "colleagues" are here on the forum ready to attack me as well. It's always good to have some sort of a plan. I'm not quoting anybody famously or otherwise. But without a plan....you aint got ****. At least I have a plan. Your plan might be subject to question. Live or die with your own decisions. You seem kinda smart in ways. None of that will be important if you live by the rules that you wish to put upon me. Truth be known......I wish we would be having a similar conversation a year from now, and that both of us had managed to survive daily life until that time. It's just that if you decided to be more open minded about things now, I'd bet money on you being here same time next year for another discussion.
I'm not here to do anybody a "favor". I don't serve matter of fact. But I will keep myself alive with or without your blessings and limited beliefs.
If I were to live by your mantra....I may or may not be alive today and we may not be having this conversation. Talk to me more about the risks I'm taking.
