I have a sister who works in an office and is thinking of getting a conceal carry purse for her SR9c. Would appreciate any comments from women who have experience with them.

i wouldn't suggest purse carry what if someone rips her purse off her shoulder? best way imo is on your person i use a crossbreed supertuck iwb holster

As a certified instructor, I've trained with them and do provide information about them to my classes, but I must say it is a far less than optimal way to carry.

The only way a gun is going to be of use to anyone is if it is on their body when they need it. A purse in an office is going to be put into a drawer or locker. It will have to be locked securely.

Any kind of purse can be taken away from a woman rather easily, especially from behind. In a crowd, the mugger merely cuts the strap, so the method of carry of the purse is fairly irrelevant. A "fanny pack" is no more secure. The strap can be cut and the purse or pack snatched quickly, before you notice.

Most women put their purse down frequently, especially in the car. If you are separated from your purse, you will not have access to your gun and, most likely, no time to get it. You may also lose it to a thief. Then you have the pleasure of knowing that you just provided a firearm to a thief...

A lot of women are willing to live with these serious limitations because they don't believe they have other options.
I'd suggest they do some reading here at "Cornered Cat": Cornered Cat | If you have to fight, fight like a cornered cat.

They might find some other answers.

I have a bag I carry in.

Cross-shoulder, with a substantial strap, so theft is unlikely.

At work, I do keep it in a drawer, sometimes locked, fully realizing that I will not be able to reach it as quickly as if I carried on-body.

However, I still think the benefits outweigh not carrying at all, which would be the other option in my case. In my mind, the most common scenario I would face would be a disgruntled ex-employee gaining access to the building and going on a rampage. I would hope to have time to recover my weapon and take cover.

As for the holster, I just took a basic generic model and attached it to the inside of one of the pouches with industrial Velcro. It sits in the same place as an OWB holster would.

Starting to see people who do like a Purse for carry. With these purses am I right in thinking that when you walk around with it you can hold it in a way that if you should be attacked you can draw from the purse even with the purse closed?

It is always better to be carrying on your person as opposed to a purse or even fanny pack. I think sometimes women's clothing can make carrying on your person more difficult than it is for men, but not impossible if the right gun and rig are chosen. I would not recommend a purse unless you intend to NEVER take it off your shoulder. Even then you would still be vulnerable to having it snatched from you. With the right gun and rig, a lady can CC even in elegant evening dress. Explore all your options here.

Here's my advice from when I carry off body:

There are straps with cables that run through them as well to stop people from cutting and running. Or simple attach a cable or chain that runs along side her original strap.

And yes the firearm should be in a pocket with nothing else, in the same position every time (line it with Velcro and get an attachment). Maybe not immediately accessible, but the faster she can get to it the better.

Shoulder strap should be worn cross body with the bag in front of her if she is in a crowded area.

Situational awareness is always priority, as it will stop most grabs.

Know and understand the limitations and handicaps of off body carry, train to try and minimize them.
