Any thoughts on the compact hi-point 9

My friend is thinking about buying a hi-point 9 compact. Buying mostly on cost and likes the feel as well. Thanks

1 step down from a hi point would be a bullet held with a pair of vice grips hit with a ball peen hammer. just saying

I own two Hi-Points, the 9mm and the .40. The 9mm is my concealed carry. I have been happy with both, and the manufacturer has a lifetime warranty on the firearms. I recently inherited my .40 from a deceased retired federal officer who didn't take care of the gun at all, and ended up sending it back to the factory for repairs. Even though I wasn't the original owner and the damage was caused by neglect, Hi-Point replaced the slide at no cost, and threw in a new mag to boot. While I eventually hope to own a Glock, at this time I own two weapons that are dead-on accurate, reliable, and that don't break the bank to own.

I have a couple specific guns to purchase first but... after reading to many threads where Hi Points are bashed I went to check out their products.

Heavy for sure. My 9mm loaded with 15 rounds weighs less than their .380 empty. BUT, at $140 and an unconditional warantee. Im thinkin it would be perfect for my kid. Would make a great second gun when hunting for him.

I have to agree with ezkl2230. I also own two Hi Points, a 9mm and a .45, with the 9mm as my carry. Both are dead-on accurate and reliable, and I didn't have to take out a bank loan to purchase them.

I have a C9 and have over a thousand rnds through it without a failure. The gun is large for concealed carry, but makes a good nightstand unit as it will take +p+ ammo. It's a fun gun to plink with at the range and it's easy on your hand. It will also exceed your accuracy expectations.

Biggest Concern: It uses the firing pin to eject spent shells. This means you should not eject a live rnd, it has the possibility of firing when the shell would be half ejected.

I keep the C9 on my boat without a chambered shell. I also carry it in the Jeep when we go on desert runs in Yuma. The desert load is a shot shell used for snakes when/if needed.
For Concealed Carry, I use my LCP or LC9 with a chambered round.

Looks like this might be shaping up to be the Hi-Point version of "Taurus sucks/no it doesn't".

I have no experience with the brand and, based on what I've read over the years, don't plan to....at least not for self defense. Too many other inexpensively priced guns out there (Ruger, Kel-Tec....even Taurus) that have a better rep.

Any time you ask a question about a low priced firearm you will get people laughing and/or bad mouthing the thing. Most of those people have never handled one, much less fired one. The word for these people is "Gun Snob"

The C9 is a very dependable weapon, I've put over 3000 rounds through mine with no issue (other than break-in).
I have an uncle that has owned the .380 for about 10 years. Also no issues.

Admittedly its not a pretty thing to look at, but thats true from either end.

Also I've never seen any sort of statistic that says "thugs" use Hi-Points. Yes they are low priced but most "thugs" aren't buying weapons, so price doesn't concern them...

+1 Laithe

They seem to have the break-in issues under control. My C-9 needed a minor sight adjustment, no ftf, fte, or any issues with the mag or feed ramp that they had a few years back.

Try one, you might like it. It's a great starter gun for someone on a limited budget.

No, no, and no again except as a paper weight or in place of lead sinkers. Range time would be more effective with a slingshot.

A couple or three years ago, after having stumbled upon a few reviews and/or threads similar to this one about High-Points, I went to a gun show and saw them for the first time. The .45 model was only $150 bucks, and I thought to myself, "What the heck, let me see what that thing feels like in my hand." So I reached for it to pick it up, and I think I might have torn a ligament in my shoulder! That thing was like an anvil!

Obviously, I passed on it and haven't regretted spending my money on other things that day. I could never carry something that heavy. That said, I have no sarcastic comments to make against anyone who has bought (or plans to buy) one, especially if, like the owners in this thread have said, they perform well for them. To each his own.

You should have seen the target today after my time on the range breaking in my 9mm. All that was left of the bull's eye was big hole. I never did THAT with a sling shot! Same results with my .40. You can talk smack about Hi-Point all day long, but my results tell a different story.

@ The_Outlaw -- as to the idea that Hi-points are "thug guns", I am a medically retired federal officer who was injured in the line of duty.

I have handled a few Hi-Points over the years, only fired one extensively... the .45acp version.

It was accurate within 20 yards at the range, sorry no tactical training done with it. It is heavy, but sturdy... which can double as a club if I need to bash a zombie head. It was 100% reliable with FMJ, didn't fire JHP or SP.

It is on the large side, so not preferable for CCW but a plinker or even nightstand weapon would work. Open carry wouldn't be an issue either.

It is my brother-in-law's weapon, he's told me he has fired around 1000rds through it without a problem to date. I'm assuming using FMJ target loads.

For the price... as a plinker/target, beginner on budget, or even home defense weapon it's not bad. This of course given one didn't purchase a lemon(which all brands have them).

Tell your buddy to give it a try, and find out for himself.

Here's a recent video review I found,

That might be so and thank you for your service, but the only people that come in even asking about hi-point are kids and thugs. Seriously, I am not knocking high-point inthusists, it's just how things work out here in the 'burbs.
