Anti-gun rally in Downtown Columbus

There is an anti-gun rally in downtown Columbus, Ohio today. I just heard on the radio one of the speakers say that in the last 8 months there have been "thousands and thousands" of gun deaths in the United States. I wonder if that is a correct statistic. It seems high to me.

Well, according to Wiki in 2010 there were 8,306 murders committed with firearms. I would venture to guess that most of those were criminals killing other criminals. In 2010 there were 19,392 suicides "involving" firearms. So, that right there more than 2,000 firearms related deaths per month.

More people die every year due in vehicles still, though. But nobody talks about requiring a universal background check to buy a car. Or passing a law that makes possessing a vehicle that goes over 40mph illegal.

Probably higher than the number of people listening to him.

Whats wrong with you people? When are you people going to wise up and stop all of this BS rhetoric? The government could CARE LESS about statistics, ANY STATISTICS. The government wants your guns plain & simple. The government will do everything possible to get your guns. Because you people can't seem to figure this out, eventually the government will get your guns.

Nothing. This thread and the post you responded to aren't about the government. They're about a rally in Columbus and what was said there by people who have nothing to do with the government. What's wrong with you?

There were more counter protesters than those who were there protesting "illegal guns" (a high of about 40 -Columbus Dispatch ). Blomberg's anti gun tour is not what anyone would call successful. In fact the tour hasn't been successful at any of its stops. Even the mayors who were supporting Bloomberg realize that they were mislead and are dropping out.

My response had to do with these "people having nothing to do with the government" mentioning STATISTICS. My response also had to do with these "people having nothing to do with the government" mentioning LIBERAL SOCIALIST POTUS, the UNITED NATIONS, and CONGRESS (all government connections) in their posts. What's wrong with you?

In HELL Everyone Is A Believer...It's Just Too Late.

I just checked the FBI's crime statistics web page. They only have their preliminary 2012 report. I would find it highly unlikely that someone has decent information concerning crime by type for year 2013.

However, murders in 2011 were 14,612 with 67.7% committed with firearms. That means there were almost 9900 murders in 2011 committed with firearms.

Therefore, it's reasonable to assume that in 8 months time in year 2013, that the term "thousands and thousands" is not off the mark, however, this radio announcer certainly did not get his data from the FBI crime statistics.

Almost all black on black. Outside of Trayvon, kindly NAME ONE--and anyone with half a brain knows why that one made the news.

But for a real awakening, look at blunt object deaths. More people get beat to death with objects than get killed by rifles that the left wants banned.

Not high at all. 8 months is 3/4 of a year, and each year there is approximately 30-33,000 gun RELATED deaths each year. One thing I went a long time before learning is that approximately 20,000 of those are suicides. That means that even if you could take guns out of that equation, you're going to have the same problem with substituted variables. So guns cannot be argued to be the problem in the case of suicides at all. Another statistic they won't like you to hear is that vehicles kill approximately 35,000 people each year, and drunk drivers alone kill approximately 8-10,000 people. That means that factoring out suicides by guns and all other vehicle related deaths, drunk drivers kill just as many, if not more people than gun related homicides and accidents each year. Where's our vehicle-control policies and anti-car fanatics? These protestors you speak of are simply the puppets of a government wanting to control it's subjects.

The rifles the left are trying to ban don't even account for more than 1% of all gun related CRIMES, let alone all of gun related DEATHS!

Apparently a lot less than you. These "people" didn't mention the government. Only one person mentioned Obama, but that was not the post you responded to. Yet you seem to feel justified in calling others wrong based on words they never actually posted. So who's wrong? The person who actually read what was posted or the one that's chastising others for something that didn't happen? Now had your remarks been directed at the people at the protest rather than at the people on this forum, I would have agreed with you.

Again...LIBERAL, SOCIALIST, POTUS, UNITED NATIONS, and CONGRESS (all government connections). The government could CARE LESS about statistics, ANY STATISTICS. You people can't seem to figure this out. Read it any way that you choose, I could care less if you agree or not.

I believe you meant to say, "I couldn't care less" and "the government couldn't care less", which would mean you and the government are already at the least level of care about the matters you mentioned. If I'm wrong and you really do have the ability to care less and the government has the ability to care less and you wanted us to know that then I apologize.

Correct. And less than the blunt object deaths. So why haven't we banned hammers and baseball bats yet?
