The NYSCC received word on Wednesday afternoon that the bill to authorize hunting with crossbow, A 10583A (aka the “Sweeney Bill”) has been delivered to the Governor. The Council opposes this bill because of its negative impact on the youth hunt:
“§ 8. The only junior hunter days for big game hunting the department of environmental conservation may authorize during archery seasons are junior archery days.”
In our hard-fought effort to get youth hunt legislation passed, we find it unacceptable that this bill contains language repealing all but junior archery hunting on special days. We believe the Governor should veto this bill and that another should be introduced for 2013 that would protect the youth hunt while allowing the use of crossbows.
The youth big game hunt held this year took place during the archery season with no incidents; all reports to the DEC indicated was that it was a successful event. There is no reason why a big game youth hunt cannot continue to be held during the archery season.
