Another "What do you recommend" thread, with some "what do you not recommend" too..

I am a bit impatient when it comes to searching through thousands and thousands of posts to get recommendations on weapons, so instead I thought I would try posting the question again...

The question is, what do you recommend as a carry weapon. Some criteria I am set on (I think) would be:

- Would like a larger caliber (.40 or .45, maybe a 9mm)
- Am looking for something that has decent recoil and isnt super-poppy
- Am ok to carry a compact versus a subcompact
- The bigger the capacity the better
- Would like to try and be reasonable in price
- Am not too keen on getting a Glock (just because everyone else has one it seems).

If you are bored and want to make a recommendation, please feel free to do so... Let me know why you think its great.

Also, what weapons should one avoid and why?

Thanks in advance for your time!

I love answering this question and will any number of times. I really am impressed with my Ruger LC9. Very concealable, very shootable, recoil not that bad for a little gun at 9mm. Oh, and I am very happy with the Crossbreed SuperTuck holster I purchased for the LC9 (figured you'd probably want to know that bit too).

Everyone seems to have a Glock for a damn good reason. I wouldn't not get one just because it is popular. There are too many variables in your question for me to answer with my phone. Do you have a range where they rent different guns so you can try several out to see what you like?

Are you looking for a gun for legitimate protection or a gun that nobody else has, and that you can show off or look cool with?
Everyone else has a Glock because they are great guns. Buy a Glock if you want legitimate protection.

My regular carry is a Springfield XD9sc. Great gun for most situations, but during the heat of the SC summers I'll opt for my Kahr PM9. Conceals better wearing shorts and t-shirts. The XD eats any and everything, never a single hiccup. The Kahr was a little finicky at first but getting better with a little break-in. Glocks are great guns, several friends have'um and I shoot them on a regular basis at the range. The XD just fits my hand better and I seem to be more accurate with the XD.

There are so many options these days its crazy. Glock, the xd(m) series, Taurus 709 and 740 slim, Taurus mellenium pro series, ruger Sr9(c), s&w m&p(c) ect ect ect. You really just gotta go somewhere where you can rent them, borrow some friends or spend a lot of time at a store handling each one

I have to say I am not a Glock fan, but as noted above, there is a very good reason many people carry them.

If you don't want a Glock, go M&P .40. Snappy, yet light enough your daughter could shoot it.

I love all my Berettas and I don't like any auto that is double action only.
That's why I abhor Glocks but I will quickly add that if you're ok with DA only, it's hard to beat a Glock for any price. (yeah, I had to hold my nose to say that but I am an honest man). As most everyone here says, get out to a range and rent a few and see what you like and feel comfortable shooting. THAT is the gun you need to buy and with no regards to brand. (Then buy it at Bud's Guns)
Good luck and happy hunting!

To each his own - but I will add that Glocks are very forgiving. I mean they don't require a lot of attention, clean easier than many, easy to shoot, fairly accurate, lots of rounds, etc, etc. Also easy to sell and get the next one, because many people are familiar with it.

Glock 19, TruGlow fiber optic sights, extended slide release, lots of ammo, go shoot it. Best pistol in the world.

Will have to agree with Glock, great weapon, great customer service, and no matter what abuse you do to it, it will always go bang when needed...... CONDITION GLOCK !!!!

I am a huge fan of the XD I can conceal the 4" model but the compact would be even better. they have plenty of capacity, shoot great, and handle any ammo you feed it. I also like the grip safety as I feel like the XD has the best safety setup. I am also a big fan of the Ruger SR9c, it has a great trigger, shoots very well. I haven't put enough rounds through it to verify reliability but no hiccups so far. Personally I am not a fan of the tiny pocket guns unless used as a backup or you can't conceal anything else. I would highly recommend the crossbreed it is honestly the best holster I have tried, and versus other IWB holsters this one completely made the weapon disappear where others still showed a lump. Of course these are all personal opinions so take it for what it is worth. Your best bet is to go to a range that rents guns and try as many as you can. And don't give up on Glock just because so many people have them, they are great guns, maybe not as pretty or cool but they WORK and thats what you need in a defense gun.

I've never liked double action only autos by any mfgs and never will. If I wanted a long trigger pull every time I fired a shot I would shoot my Colt Python exclusively and carry speed loaders in my pocket. Much better double action than any auto I ever fired and that includes Glocks/Berettas/whatever.

Since I didn't see price as a factor I will recommend an H&K usp compact. I carry one in 9mm but you can get it in .40 and .45 as well. They are just as durable and reliable and actually more accurate than a glock and feels a lot better in your hand. As for capacity 9 mil carries 13+1. All the controls are located conveniently located. Plus owners don't need to throw their's in the dirt to prove it's tough, we just know it's going to work every time. Recoil isn't bad at all in the 9 mil but if you went with the larger caliber in the compact model you can imagine the recoil would be a lot snappier. So like I said, if you are willing to drop $800-900 then you can't go wrong.

Also there are several trigger variations (about 9 I think) depending on your preference. Standard they're all DA/SA with a decocker and the compacts have a recessed hammer so no snagging on your clothes.
