Another GOOD experience OC'ing (@ Walmart)

OC for Tactical Advantage
Every story like this will help someone understand better, the majority of encounters OC'ers have. This occurred on 05/08/2012 8:30 pm'ish, at the Richland WA Walmart.

My wife and I were making a quick visit to the walmart for some dog food and window cleaning wipes for the car. I was dressed in my normal attire (jeans, polo, vest), while my wife had gym style clothing on. I was carrying my Jericho 941 at the 3 o'clock weapon side, with kbar tdi knife on my reaction side.

After entering the building, the greeter made eye contact, looked down at my firearm, and then remade eye contact (I assume he noticed because he was in a wheelchair, and my firearm was at his head level, otherwise almost no greeters have noticed my firearm). I smiled and said good evening, which he replied with a smile and good evening back. We turned left down the first main aisle towards the dog food. We made it about 20 feet before a gentleman who was standing by the greeter exclaimed "Excuse me sir!" My wife and I turned around, to see an older man in his 50-60's, walking up to us. At this point, it was a little bit awkward as he had to project his voice a little bit to reach us.

He quickly smiled and told me my attire looked good. He asked me if I was a police officer, which I replied no. He then went on and on about how great it was to see another person carrying a firearm, and that he too carries but is too afraid to be hassled for OC. The majority of the conversation was one sided, and I stood there smiling and nodding, because he knew exactly what the point of open carrying was:

1. To get the people accustomed to seeing firearms again.
2. To deter criminals.
3. To keep my wife safe.

Throughout the conversation, he would ask questions such as, "Have you ever had a bad encounter?" "Have police ever bothered you?" "Has a store ever kicked you out?" Which I answered, "Yes, I had one bad encounter, no police have ever bothered me, and no no company has ever kicked me out." He brought up a story about a man from Prosser WA that was arrested for not leaving company property after being asked to leave, which I then stated he must of been arrested for trespassing, which was correct.

It was refreshing to hear another person who does not OC himself, be able to articulate why some of us do OC. He did at one point, face me, and lift the front of his shirt up to reveal his firearm which was in a crossdraw IWB holster (I believe it was a Ruger LC9). He then asked my wife if she carried, and openly as well. Which she replied she does carry, but only open carries when she is with me. I then introduced myself, and he introduced himself as Mike, we shook hands and parted ways.

Despite the slight awkwardness at the beginning, the conversation went extremely well. So Mike, if you come find this thread, and you know it's you I was talking with, thank you for such a pleasant conversation.

On a side note: Earlier that day, my wife and I were getting subs at Quiznos. The guy making our sandwiches asked what kind of firearm I carry. I told him Jericho 941, which he replied, "oh nice, my brother has a Sig 1911, and yours looks like it, I thought maybe it was the same." I then asked him is **** your last name? He looked shocked and said yes. I work with his brother, and even shot the Sig he was referring to. His face was priceless.

Just another day in the life of FFC.

That sounds awful and uncomfortable. Why the eff would he show you he was carrying? Sounds like a dbag and the kind of person that carrys for the attention and "cool" factor. I would have said good afternoon and walked away.

Really. Ifeel for you living your life in a unsociable manner if you are not gøod enough to speak with a stranger on a daily basis you will die awful lonely. Live you life to live well.

I guess I’m that unsocial bastard then, If I was minding my own business (which is what I’m usually doing) and some random stranger chased me down in a Wal Mart (or anywhere else) to ask me about my gun and play show and tell with his my creep-o-meter would be off the scale. That isn’t normal behavior and I assure you I'd make that quite clear.

I realize that if I choose to open carry some idiot is going to assume it’s an invitation into my bubble and I try to be gracious about that but chasing me down in a store and yelling about my gun isn’t going to end well.

I thought about you when my wife and I were talking about this incident. How, in this instance, I felt the very beginning was awkward due to the projection of Mikes voice (and how some would not respond to that kindly, and rightfully so). Like I said before, I am extremely patient with people, and maybe one day that will bite me in the ass. My wife was nervous the first few minutes because of the first impression, but after a few minutes of talking, it was a relaxed setting.

Now, when he was louder, it was just to get my attention. He didn't say anything about my firearm until he was within conversational distance. So unless you were standing to my right, someone would of just thought we knew each other from outside the store.

I don't think I'm all that far out there on this one. Running up to some stranger you don't know is not normal behavior and I am amazed that anyone who routinely carries a gun would do something that stupid.

Had he done it to me I'd would have gone into fight mode and very likely taken a defensive stance

Every time someone has the audacity to open carry heads explode here at USA Carry and other gun boards. :sarcastic:

Open carry would be a lot easier but I've always felt like it would cause too many problems. After reading your post I'm thinking I should give it a try.

Guy sounds like an idiot to me. He chases after a guy who is carrying a gun at Walmart, and then brandishes his gun to him (Chen). Wow we have some stupid ones out there these days.

If you are from Tacoma, WA, shoot me a PM and I'll get you to another site that has ALL the positives, and a few negative encounters with OC in WA State. I OC pretty much everywhere here in the Spokane area, but there are a lot more people in the West Side of the state that OC regularly and life goes on just peachy. Heck I went camping in a State Park, OC the entire time without an issue from other guests or the Rangers last weekend. I also OC in the Spokane Wal-Marts fairly often without issue, and the list goes on without issue here.

I had employees at the Pasco Walmart follow me around for a while when my g27 was printing. I'm pretty sure they thought it was merchandise under my shirt...lol

Good to hear there are more people carrying around here than I thought.

I frequent the Pasco wal mart much more than the Richland one. Maybe we will see each other around. :-)

It seems walmart is the favorite place to show everyone that you have a gun.

I also find it odd when people get grumpy about the attention they may get while open carrying...arent you doing it for the attention?Just saying.

I cc because its my special secret sssshhhhh

My wife & I were shopping in Walmart Saturday. We were both CC'ing because OC is still illegal here. We spoke to at least half a dozen strangers & a couple of friends we ran into.

The primary thought running in my mind at the time was, "I'm so glad to live where I do!"

Florence really has some of the most friendly people I've ever met. It doesn't matter your skin color or your financial status. People here will usually say hello and some will even begin some small talk conversations.

We moved here almost 25yrs ago & didn't know a single person. If it weren't for the friendliness of the people here, the "strangers" we've met never would've become friends. I really feel sorry for all the cynical people out there who are open to befriending new people. I can't imagine how BAD life would be, if I lived somewhere where people didn't ever say "hello" or extend there hand to a stranger that could become a friend.

Lol I think I see sarcasm...but...

I open carry everywhere, so technically there is no favorite place. I haven't come across any open carriers who became upset for the attention they have gotten....not sure were you picked that up. Just saying. :-)
