Can anyone tell me how long is the shelf life of ammo. I know it depends on the environment in which it's kept but say in an ordinary family home?

Longer than the time you need to use it up.

In 1992 I was unloading crates of 5.56 ball for a qual range at Ft. Lewis the ammunition had been packed in 1969

I have some 7.62 ball year 1972, it shoots well and group size is less than on inch at 100 yds.

I still have some 30-06 ammo dated 1967 (military Match) that shoot just fine! I have shot pistol ammo from 1944 that shot and functioned well. Unless it has been subject to very extreme conditions it should last almost indefinitly.
