Ammo Storage

Hi there,

I was wondering what some or all of you do for ammo storage. I'm sitting on about 1500 rnds of 45 ACP in 50 rnd boxes and have been doing some research on ammo storage. I've been looking at the MTM boxes with the rubber seal. I wanted to know if anybody has them and how much they'll hold. Also if anybody has purchased anything else for storage, suggestions would be welcome. In the meantime I'll shop around some more.

I keep mine in military ammo cans.. They are usually cheap...

IMO there are 2 parts to this question/answer. First is the way you store and the second is the where you store. The way you store obviously involves the safety of the ammo and the environment you are storing it in. This sounds more like your question. The second part is the where you store it. If you have a safe of something that is fool proof, then the solution is obvious, but you also want the ammo to be readily accessible to you--you do not want it locked up in such a position that it will take you a ladder and 30 minutes just to access it. If you do not, your little cache of ammo lying on the floor of your closet is comfortably waiting for a thief to take this nicely packaged all in one container of ammo. My reason for replying is my solution to the where. I do not have a safe or something fool proof and I want it accessible to me. What do I do? I have my ammo in one of those hollowed out plastic home tool carrying cases that are the size of a business case. I keep the case in the bottom of one of those vegetable/fruit cartons that I use to throw old newspapers before I bring them out to the trash. It sits in obvious display in my indoor laundry room (climate control-no humidity/temperature) and looks like the pile of papers that it is; in the bottom underneath the papers is this "ammo case".I also use one of those typical gun locks around the handle so that the grandkids, should they ever come across it, cannot get into it. If I were a thief, I sure would look in your closet but not in a pile of papers sitting in a laundry room. Hope you get a good answer to the "way" you store. To me, my "where" works great (haven't had it burglar-tested though).

I use military ammo cans....A SAW ammo can holds 24x 50 round boxes of .45 ACP. A 5.56 ball ammo can holds 7x 25 round boxes of 2 3/4" 12 ga shells. I keep them in the garage currently until I have a better place to keep them. Although given my neighborhood, I am not concerned at all with someone breaking in to steal my firearms/ammo- my collection is TINY compared to some of the people around me haha.

From a usability stand point don't be to concerned how its stored. I've shot alot of 50+ year old ammo. Keep the rain and snow off of it and it should be fine. Let other factors. like theft and kids be your concern. Just my 2 cents.

Military surplus ammo boxes, as others have said before me. I store each caliber in it's own labeled box for quick access. I don't want to have to rummage around for the correct ammo when seconds count. Any army surplus store should carry them.

Military storage boxes, keep out of high heat and ammo should be good for your lifetime+

I store mine in military surplus ammo cans on racks in a locked room in the basement. Plus the house is alarmed although I suspect any robbers would be long gone before anyone from the sheriff's office would show. Still, they'd have to get by two very observant doberman dogs who don't accept food from anyone who's not a family member. I guess they could shoot the dogs but they'd better be quick to get 'em both.

Since I live in the country, I'm not bound by any city ordinances specifying limits on how much ammo can be kept on hand. I have notified the responding Fire Department that quite a bit of ammunition is stored at the residence. Some might say that's a quick tip-off there's likely lots of guns in the house but it wouldn't be too difficult to figure out anyway since I have an outdoor range on my property and shoot nearly every day. So it's obvious from the noise factor.

Guns are in safes...except for the ones kept close at hand. Ideally, if I would have built this house from scratch, I would have put in a poured concrete/reinforced/steel door gun room which would have been large enough for guns, ammo and reloading supplies.
