ammo question

I was having a discussion with an acquaintance. I told him I just bought a S&W 4516-2 .45. I was given a box of .45 hollow point hydra shock personal defense ammo. The box sais .45 auto. He said the ACP and auto are different ammo and the auto won't work in my gun. I told him he was wrong and we made a bet. Who's right?

45 auto and 45 acp are the same round. Have two barrels for my Ruger p90 and one is marked 45 auto and the other is 45 acp. Both handle the same rounds!!!!!

I believe that those two terms tend to be used interchangeably....and I also understand that there is a .45 Auto Rim that has very similar dimensions as ACP, however, the head space is a bit different...but I am certainly no ammo expert...

Like the others said your good with ACP. As stated before its the same. Now if you wanted to ask 9mm Luger vs. 9mm + P or .223 vs 556 that would be fun.

Semantics... .45ACP and .45 auto are one in the same, just depends on how you want to say it... the "ACP" stands for 'Automatic Colt Pistol', as it was designed for Colt's new pistol of Browning design. There is however, the .45 Auto Rim that was developed for the M1917 revolver that had been intended to be used with half-moon clips. The 'Auto Rim' was more or less a semi-rimmed .45ACP cartridge, remember... the .45ACP is considered to be rim-less. This allowed the revolver to be used without the half-moon clips(& .45ACP) and be loaded traditionally as any other revolver.

Again... same round. The 'Long Colt' came about in and around 1905 with the development of the other round we're discussing(.45ACP). You see, people would refer to the new .45ACP load as simply .45 Colt(easier to say) so it created confusion with the older, and actual .45 Colt cartridge used in the famous SAA. So, to solve the problem... manufactors started marketing the original .45 Colt as the 'Long Colt'.
