I have a New York state carry permit and have just applied for the Utah and Fla. permit. Can I drive thru South Carolina with a handgun loaded or unloaded or do I have to avoid the state altogether?

Loaded in the glove or console, or concealed if you have reciprocity by the time you drive through. Concealed carry legal in our rest areas also.

(9) a person in a vehicle if the handgun is secured in a closed glove compartment, closed console, closed trunk, or in a closed container secured by an integral fastener and transported in the luggage compartment of the vehicle; however, this item is not violated if the glove compartment, console, or trunk is opened in the presence of a law enforcement officer for the sole purpose of retrieving a driver’s license, registration, or proof of insurance;

NOTE: If you don't have a trunk (SUV or Truck), luggage compartment = behind last seat or behind (but NOT under) drivers seat, respectively. Can be loaded in any of these locations.

New York does not honor South Carolina concealed carry permits, nor will they issue a non-resident permit under any circumstances. Owning property in New York is not sufficient to be issued a non-resident permit.

G50AE, you have made it clear that you have a problem with SC. Many of us on this site live in SC and love our state. I "immigrated" to SC in 1981 from Southern California and have chosen to remain. For the record, I have not found the PEOPLE to be anything like you portray, with few unavoidable exceptions. I have found that in Charleston, people of all colors generally get along very well. It is not cool to constantly slam someone's home, and it detracts from the character of this great website. I think it is valid to bring up legitimate concerns and report EXPERIENCES from any location, but not right nor polite to label a state with "People's Republic..." I have never known of anyone that had any issue carrying a legal gun in SC. Maybe you have. I am open to hearing about specifics, like the beer cans thrown at the biker, but please stop adding labels. That is rude and devalues your posts.

I have on several occations mentioned and criticized South Carolina's "Shall-issue*" permit system. I haven't yet mentioned SC 23-31-180 a law that was passed for blatently racist reasons. I may have mentioned in passing title 53, section 1, a section of South Carolina law that should be repealed in its entirety. Or I could also get into some of the absurdities of title 20. Point being that there are alot of things I do not like about the law in the State of South Carolina, and I have writen to various elected official requesting remedy. I am working to change many of the problems in this state and would implore others to do likewise.

This thread is about concealed carry. You did your name-calling of SC under the context of the poster not being able to get a non-resident SC concealed permit without owning land here and the NY does not honor his permit. My post pointed out that NY does not honor SC permits and that you can not get a non-resident permit at all from NY. This was to contrast the two state policies and show "advantage SC" in that argument.

SC 23-31-180...seriously? This section prohibits diecast pistols. If the discussion is race, it is off topic. The other references are TOTALLY unrelated to firearms, and there is a place for that in Off-Topic forum. You will be much more effective there, or in the 2nd amendment forum for -180, and certainly much more effective without the name-calling.

I'm not sure why you chose to run this thread off topic simply because I gave a current and correct description of firearms law here in the People's Republic of South Carolina. But then again I was accused of being hostile to LEO's in another thread simply because I stated that caneguns fall under NFA rules.:wacko:

G, you've got to be kidding me. The original poster asked if he could drive through the state with his gun in the car. I told him he could travel with his loaded weapon in the glove and posted the appropriate laws. This is your reponse:
