CCW Training distances
Mojoman,
Some very good answers already. Typically i tell people to train from 0-7 yards, and then occasionally out further just to develop some better skill sets. Anything out further than 21-30 feet is really too far to shoot in most defensive situations with a carry pistol considering you will likely be in an "urban environment" with other people around, not in an open wheat field. Adrenaline will be flowing, and even if you have trained for years to shoot at 50 yards with a 4 inch gun it MAY not be a safe shot at that distance with the possibly of missing center mass, or worse injuring or killing someone else.
If you have a distance greater than 21 feet or 7 yards, you might be able to make the distance even further and not have to shoot at all, that would be ideal since you want to stop the threat, getting away safely without using your gun is a good thing that stops the threat. You could find cover, get in your car and drive away, call the police and let them deal with the threat.
Bad guys, suspects can travel 21 feet in 1.0-1.5 seconds. That is not a lot of time, remember that distance is your friend. Once you feel comfortable practice shooting ouy to 21 feet, then practice getting off the line of attack while drawing and shooting, but do it with snap caps until you are very comfortable moving, drawing and shooting. Have someone watch you to make sure you are not making safety mistakes, it is very easy to make mistakes learning more advanced techniques. Remember, all guns are loaded, never let the muzzle cover anything you don't want to DESTROY , (this means your leg and foot here, and why i suggest someone watch you dry fire A LOT before going hot), keep your finger off the trigger until on target (once again someone watching you dry fire while moving), and be sure of your target (and what is beyond it) especially learning to shoot on the move and at different distances, you will have misses. That's OK it just lets you know that you made a mistake and where you need improvement.
Also, as mentioned by walknotinfear, once your groups are consistent and in the 3"-4" range out to 7 yards, start moving the target back all the way out to 25 yards.
Shoot safe and Happy Holidays
