can anyone point me in the right direction to see if alabama has an open carry law. i have asked different law enforcement and none of them know or will point me in the right direction

Alabama is an open carry state. However there have been some instances of harrassment by LE in certain jurisdictions. Check out the OpenCarry.org website, and above all, research alabama weapons statutes. This can be done online also.

Exactly. LE in AL seem to know very little on gun laws. I thought my case of being disarmed as I and my team were spread on the outside of our suv and all of our weapons taken because we looked suspicious. But you should have seen the look on his face when he found out the US Marshall riding with us was a US Marshall.

I did have a friend who is a Chief of police in TN that was open carrying in his motorcycle and was pulled over at gunpoint for open carry. These guys need to be educated.

There is no law specifically protecting open carry in Alabama, but there also is no law prohibiting it either. What is not illegal is legal. There is also court precedence supporting open carry. Specifically Looney v. State and State v. Reid.

Not sure about this one. Is it legal in some counties and not others? I live in Chambers county and my permit has listed under the rules #1 This permit does not permit you to carry a gun openly. Anyone have an answer?

It is legal in all of Alabama. Your permit does not permit you to carry openly because you don't need a permit to open carry. Looney vs State established that. And counties can't have different laws about guns. Alabama has a preemption law that says no city, county, or municipality can regulate the possession or ownership of handguns, only the state legislature can.

Alabama open carry

I live in Alabama and I recently got my concealed carry permit. As I was leaving the lady said, "you know no part of your weapon can be exposed.". When I asked if there was a list of the weapons laws, she told me no, just Google it. This is very confusing to me! What is the difference if open carry is legal?

Open carry is legal in Alabama, by law and Attorney General opinions. Still, you will probably be stopped and questioned.

When my ex-wife got her concealed pistol license in Washington, the woman taking our application couldn't wait to tell her that even though she was a military dependent that she was required to obtain a Washington Driver's License. Completely false information. I emailed the Sheriff with the Washington Administrative Code that stated that military dependents were exempt from the in-state driver's license requirement and that his secretaries should stop providing legal advice, especially incorrect legal advice. He responded that I was correct, the WAC exempted military dependent's from the driver's license requirement and that he would rectify the situation.

I doubt the counter person who made that statement is qualified at all to interpret law and, obviously, has no idea what the law says (or in the case, does not say).
