Affirmative action has really pisses me off so I feel the need to address something here.
If you refer to yourself as African American, Native American, Asian American, or whatever the case may be...then you're on the wrong page! By referring to yourself as such, you PROMOTE division in America.
I am FED UP with people thinking they are owed something due to the atrocities their ancestors suffered decades if not centuries ago!
Millions of Americans have never been guilty of mistreating ANYONE for their race, religion, gender, or sexual preference so if you think people should cater to for something that happened ages ago, you're terribly delusional and downright stupid!
I don't care what your gender or creed is, NO ONE in America should receive special treatment for the color of their skin, gender, or sexual preference.
You are owed NOTHING and you deserve NOTHING that you haven't worked for and earned by the sweat from your brow!
If you feel differently, SAVE IT, because I really don't give SCHEISSE how you feel about it. Why? Because you are no different than the parasites of society with their Obama phones in hand.
Stop asking what your community or country can do for you, and start asking what you can do for your community and country!
Drop the hyphens and be an AMERICAN because whether we perish or thrive, we are all in this together.

That message is about as useful in uniting America as the freeloaders.

Cultural diversity has little to do with entitlements. Stereotyping people will never unify the country, it will only tear it apart.

Good job.

There was nothing particularly divisive about the original post. I feel the same way sometimes because a lot of times these attitudes exceed cultural diversity and approach whining and cries of racism. But that's just me and my helpful English-Irish-Scottish-French American self speaking!

What pisses me off is the necessity for affirmative action. There's still plenty of people out there who discriminate, and plenty of people who still get treated unfairly just because of what they look like. Affirmative action sucks, and does wind up hurting people, and probably keeps people thinking of themselves as separate when they shouldn't be. Unfortunately, can't get rid of it until everyone gets treated fairly. Wish there was something better to replace it with...

Sounds to me like someone Pissed in the OPs Cheerios, and he didn't get his share of entitlements. A Native American that asks for nothing but the govt gone!~

They Stereotype themselves.

"The Further A Society Drifts From The Truth The More It Will Hate Those Who Speak It".
~ George Orwell ~

How so? You know that everyone that says that they are Chinese-American said so because they want entitlements?

Do you also believe all gun owners just want to shoot someone?

What other stereotypes are okay to you?

Maybe, all Christians are judgmental hypocrites?

To the op, it's okay to have pride in being an American, but not okay to have pride in another country we come from?

Opsspec, The "Hyphenated American" issue is not a new one which surprises a lot of people. There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all... The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic... There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else…Theodore Roosevelt, Columbus Day, 1915

That's sad..one of the most important reasons this nation became so great was immigration. The freedom of mixing cultural diversities. But alas, freedom is just an American illusion.

Especially when people get screwed in the name of "diversity" , "equal opportunity", and minority hiring quotas.. There is also a huge difference between those who immigrated here legally and the ones who have not and do not belong here.

I've never stated that quotas were a good thing. My argument, from personal experience, is that those who consider themselves a hyphenated American are not entitled or abuse affirmative action. Labeling all hyphenated Americans as bad Americans and entitled is as bad as labeling all gun owners murderers. The are hyphenated Americans that are entitled, just like there are racists who would abuse hyphenated Americans if there wasn't affirmative action. Unfortunately, as was stated before, with or without affirmative action someone will get screwed.

As far as "illegal" aliens, what does the term freedom mean to you? How about, "land of the free?"

Firefighter hit on my pet peeve about the term "African" Americans.

I just checked and there are currently 54 countries in Africa. OR, 57 according to the U.N. More than I remember from elementary geography anyway, MANY of which I have never even heard of!

For some reason, many, many people still think of Africa as a COUNTRY rather than a continent. Now THAT’S why I never understood the term “African American.” The term implies that the user is actually FROM Africa. In my lifetime I have personally only met a handful of black people who were ACTUALLY FROM AFRICA! I can understand national pride if one were actually born in, say, Ireland and referred to themselves as “Irish American,” but I’ve never met ANYONE who referred to themselves as “European American!” Why is that, I wonder?
I can’t remember who really popularized the “African” American phrase, but my aging memory says Jesse Jackson for some reason, which might explain why people might think Africa, is a country! IMO, anyway.

I’ve always been confused about how to refer to black people, though. In the mid-fifties in my all-white surroundings, the infamous “N” word was acceptable. NOW, at school and after more than one fight, I learned that was not the best term to use, but the term “colored” WAS acceptable.
Then came the 60’s where the term “colored” was replaced by the more accurate word, “Negro.” I believe it was the seventies when the term “black people” replaced the “Negro” phrase. I cannot remember when the “African American” term was invented, but I mostly stick with “black,” and have not had any problems.

As to the “necessity” for Affirmative Action, I cry bull$****. “Affirmative Action” just perpetuates discrimination. As long as you have “affirmative” action, SOMEONE is going to be unfairly discriminated against.

The way I figure is that I got to where (ever) I am by just being me. I worked and paid for everything I have myself.

When I graduated from high school I thought about being a state police officer. Until I found out that you had to be 72 inches tall. Even the local force had a 5’10” height requirement. One of the first factory jobs I applied for, I was actually ONE inch too short to work there.

Well, of course, I was absolutely devastated and never tried to find another job in my life! Actually, while I was pissed at the time, I found that life went on and I always found a way to do whatever I wanted.

The Diversity Agenda

Especially when people get screwed in the name of "diversity" , "equal opportunity", and minority hiring quotas.. There is also a huge difference between those who immigrated here legally and the ones who have not and do not belong here.
The idea of equal opportunity is a noble concept that everyone should seek to promote. However, you cannot achieve equality by granting entitlements to minorities at the expense of the majority. The leftist agenda that strives to add diversity to every aspect of life has reached the point where it is spreading the same disease it claims to cure. It's no accident that Western values have produced unprecedented health, life expectancy, wealth and personal liberty. Liberals believe that multiculturalism-the celebration of all cultures-is a better plan. For them, all cultures are morally equivalent and to deem otherwise is tagged as: elitism. Like it or not, some cultures are clearly better than others. Walter E. Williams, an economics professor at George Mason University, recently asked multiculturalists: Is forcible female genital mutilation, as practiced in nearly 30 sub-Saharan Africa and Middle Eastern countries, a morally equivalent cultural value? Slavery is practiced in Sudan and Niger; is that a cultural equivalent? In most of the Middle East, there are numerous limits on women-such as prohibitions on driving, employment, voting and education. Under Islamic law, in some countries, female adulterers face death by stoning, and thieves face the punishment of having their hand severed. Are these cultural values morally equivalent, superior or inferior to those of the West?

One key problem with the Diversity Agenda is this: It is never satisfied enough with trying to achieve equality. The more you give into it, the more it wants. A good example of this occurred last week when a cast member of NBC's Saturday Night Live, Kenan Thompson, complained openly about the lack of diversity on the show. Out of sixteen cast members, currently three are actors of color. Thompson thinks there should be a black woman on the show, and he says he will no longer dress as women on the show. If Mr. Thompson thinks there should be a black female on the show, then he should go get a sex-change operation. He and his fellow cast members already exceed the average of minorities in America. If we are going to play this game, the question should be, "Why don't we have an Asian, Hispanic, Hawaiian, Eskimo, or a dozen other minority groups represented on SNL?" The casting of SNL should be based on which comedian is best suited for the job. If all the members of the show turn out to be white, then so be it. When they base hiring on who fits a needed demographic, creativity goes out the window. It's no wonder why SNL quit being funny years ago.

A lot of whites would complain that the Diversity Agenda has given blacks and unfair advantage, but I think the opposite is more, true. The murder rate among the black young is at epidemic levels. Gang and drug violence has turned cities like Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles and Philadelphia into killing zones. The media fails to report on the carnage because they have the mindset that it would be unfair to blacks, to focus on reality. Another cover-up conducted by the liberal media is the positive image they present of the average African American family. If you see an ad on TV that shows three or more families, there is an unwritten rule that one of them needs to be a black family. With seventy percent of black households being headed by a single parent, this gross misrepresentation is a mockery of the truth. The media might as well be telling us that Haitians are wealthy people who walk around in $1000 suits and all drive a Mercedes.

The Diversity Agenda has tried to exclude Christians from society in the name of equality. Because believers control vast wealth and have endless political power, our concerns can be ignored. This would help explain why a recent series of attacks against Christians in Egypt, Sudan, and Pakistan-that left dozens dead in each incident, has received zero coverage by the media. As believers, we are already in trouble with the Diversity Agenda. We follow a Leader who said He is the only Son of God, and apart from Him there is no other path toward eternal salvation. Because of this truth, it's not possible to achieve harmony with this world.
