Advice on focus.....

Hello, well I have these new glasses, and they seem to really make my cataracts in my right eye more prominent. I was taught to shoot with the one eye closed and have always shot with my right, but now its def. Not working well. I do focus with my left which is much better and I know it may take some time to change the habit. Now trying that with the ar and red dot does not work. I have been reading up and how they say u should have both eyes open and u focus on front sight. I guess it will take time and practice but any advice would be great. And doc says till to young(41) for surgery,he suggest to wait for a little more so all the problems may be fixed at once.

Everything I have read suggests shooting pistol right handed and either learning to shoot rifles left handed, or learning how to use your right eye to shoot rifles right handed.

I have been working hard at shooting with both eyes open for a few months now. It has taken thousands of shots, most of them via my SIRT (laser, but probably a couple thousand through my glocks) until now it is absolutely second nature. My primary focus for distances over 7 meters is the front sight. Within 7 meters I don't use the sights at all. Been working on point and shoot. I'm amazed at the accuracy now with that method.

Thanks, Im going to try both eyes when I go, just put irons on the ar tonight and was looking down them and wow, total blur with right eye. Hell to make matters worse my red dot isnt a dot if I move it to higher setting due to astigmitism in the same eye. I know I will just have to practice and learn.

Howdy cripps,

Been there, done that.

My problem was that at about 42 I had to start wearing reading glasses to see the sights clearly. I started with the 1.00s, then moved to the 1.25s, then to the 1.50s.

By the time I got to the 1.50s I could no longer see the target clear enough if it was over 15' away. Since my left eye was stronger and I could see the sights without reading glasses I "trained" myself to use my left eye when shooting a pistol eventhough I'm very right eye dominate.

I did this by taking a pair of safer glasses that have removable lenses and removing the right lens and spray painting it flat black ( took several coats ) and after it was dry reinstalling it. This "forced me to use my left eye since I could not see anything with my right eye.

I shot several thousand rounds and made several hundred "quick draws" before I got in the habit of using my left eye when shooting a handgun.

This didn't help any with shooting a rifle, especially with open or peeps sights.

Nowadays at age 49 I have a different issue. Last year I developed a cataract on my right eye. I had it removed back in Feburary and had surgery to correct a slight astigmatism at the same time. Now my vision in my right eye is 20/25 and I nolonger need to wear reading glasses to read and I can now see the sights of s handgun clearly without glasses and I can still see the red bull's eye of a standard 25yd pistol target at 25yds while focusing on the front sight.

My problem is that I have to "retrain" myself to use my right eye when shooting a handgun.

Good luck with the cataract and I HTH.

Paul
