The church is the people. The church does not push its views on you unless you let them. he government on the other hand has the power of the police to make you do as you're told. "They play on your soul" the same can be said for every religion, even the religion of Atheism. The church has the same right to say gays shouldn't get married as you do to say gays should have the privilege. Or do you believe that simply because you do not agree with the belief, then no one should have the right to express their beliefs?
