A New approach to winning them over...

Jessica Carlson

Shoot like a Girl
Here's a novel idea: a few people I know are trying a new approach to win over the gun-leery individuals in their lives by inviting them to range.

Try this at home and see what responce you get?

"To: All my friends on (fill in the blank).
If you are in favor of banning so called "Assault Rifles" I would like to extend to you an invitation. I want to give you the opportunity to come to the range with me and actually fire an "assault rifle". I have worked with these rifles for many years. Please give me the opportunity to educate you on these tools. I will be respectful of your views. It will not only be fun but you might learn that "Assault Rifles" Don't actually assault anyone. Please contact me if you are interested. Thank you Friends."

You're going to lose friends. But it's ok! You shouldn't associate with those who attempt to undermine and destroy our constitution.

You have assault rifles? I can't even afford a semi auto...I'd have to sell both my vehicles and move to get an assault rifle...You are one lucky lady if you can give your friends that opportunity.

She is referring to, as she called it, "so-called assault rifle", meaning the mis-labeled weapon you and I can afford.

Seems like a nice enough approach. Maybe it'll convert a few folks.

I was just discussing this with a colleague, and I tried to explain that today's civilian-version semi 5.56 AR15 is looked at by the grabbers as such an evil weapon, when in fact it is only a moderately capable weapon (ask my cousin who spent time with one in Da Nang). The first time I saw one in a gun shop several years ago (a gun I subsequently purchased) I didn't know what it was, though I noted it resembled an M16. I picked it up by the handle with two fingers, and when I looked at the size of the hole in the muzzle, I decided it was a pellet rifle made to look like a military rifle. When I said that to the proprietor, his eyes got big. He said, "no, for cryin out loud- that's an M4!!"
He hands me a 5.56 round. I looked at the tiny cartridge, and again at the muzzle, and I said "THIS?!? This is what our guys are shooting at the enemy?!? And the bad guys got AKs and 7.62 projectiles??" I couldn't believe it.
Anyway, with .22 rimfires and such below it, and .308, 7mm, 300 mags, etc above it, my point to my colleague was, why do you suppose the grabbers are going after my M4 and AR180 when it's down in the lower half of the capability list?

Because it's scarey-looking...

Does my Stevens 320 classify as an "assault weapon?" It cost $200 new, it's a push pull and almost impossible to hunt with. Dead accurate with the 00 buck at 10 yards from an 18.25" barrel though...

Ooooo scary pistol grip lmao!

OMG. Put that thing on the front porch, and I'll send the BATFE over to pick that bad boy up right now!!

I suppose I should of said it was more "tongue in cheek"...my sarcasm didn't come across as planned :)

I wish I could afford a semi auto...as I said in another thread, an entry level Bushmaster AR does not cost $1500+...I couldn't even afford it when they were only $700 without being uncomfortable for a while financially...but I supposed it beats being uncomfortable right now not having one at all and knowing I can't get one for a long time if ever.

As yourself and other's have pointed out this is a "so-called" assault rifle. I don't actually own one and at the rate the market is going I won't be able to either, nevermind they might get banned before I even have a chance to save up for one. However, I do know a few people who own other rifles and/or handguns that are willing to take people out to the range to show them ropes. It's a novel idea and one worth sharing, even if the only thing you own is a handgun. It may just help change a multiptude of minds and opinions about firearms in general.

Yeah, I'm very fortunate - when all the craziness was starting up over Obama getting elected the first time, I was in pretty good shape with my job (still am) so I paid the $900 for the Bushmaster, and when I became frustrated with the fact that it was a "NY version", I set out to find a preban 'bad boy rifle'; got lucky again with an AR180, $1300 that time. What a great rifle. At that same time I stocked up like a lunatic on 5.56, cuz you know, they were gonna take those too!! So now I sit on 2 black rifles and a mountain of ammo, all because Obama was gonna take all of it. Still waiting for that!
I swear that man has sold more weapons and ammo, I guess than anyone in history!

An AR15 - style rifle is a good choice for that, because it's so easy to shoot, even for a rank beginner. The recoil is non-existent, easy to be accurate with, and you just have make sure they're ready for the muzzle blast which is crazy loud for that small calibre. Mine sends a shockwave in an indoor range that's pretty amazing.

"I swear that man has sold more weapons and ammo, I guess than anyone in history!" Now that I think about it you're probably right! HA!
