9mm vs .40 vs .45

I will do my best to explain my question...
I am looking to go from 9 to 40 on a tupperware pistol. I have a Lightweight Colt Commander .45. (Normally my carry piece.)
I have a 9mm Walther P99as. A very light tupperware pistol. Everyone says the .40 is "so much snappier" and the .45 pushes.

Why is the .40 always described as so much more snappier than the 9mm? The pressures are not much different on the .40 than the 9mm. (Hodgdon Reloading site.) I can see why they would be "hotter" than the .45 because the pressures are almost double.

I have not been able to locate a 40 in what I want to buy yet. I am just considering the purchase at this point.
Thanks.

40 is higher velocity at leaving the barrel. I believe compared to the 45

Comparing the 9mm... To the 40 I personally dont notice a whole lot of difference. Weight of the fun makes a big difference

So we are talking the snap of the "40" everyone talks about?? I don't notice much. The 45 has more push to me. The 40 has more "mussel" lift but really not much more than the 9mm to me. Unless the 9mm is a full size gun and you compact to a compact you can tell alot more. Same size gun not much to me between 9 & 40. JME

Does weight of the bullet matter? Projecting the larger mass uses more energy.

Bullet weight, gun weight, powder, charge weight, barrel height, spring design and probably a few more have an effect on felt recoil. The more you practice the less effect recoil is likely to have on you. You may even get to a point where you are hardly aware of it. .40 is generally described as having a sharp recoil but that will vary depending on the above and even the perception of the shooter.

I feel the 9mm PX4 to be snappier than my 45 and 40 Glock. Not the case with my XDM 9mm Compact. However, the Sig P220 has a bit of snap compared to my 1911 and Glocks. I think it depends upon the gun weight, type of ammo used, and your experience shooting. I find the Glocks, most tame in recoil because of the wider grips.

I've recently switched my carry from a S&W 4006 to a Glock 36. I love the 36. The 40 is snappy but, as has been stated here already, not much different than a 9mm in the same gun. The .45 is a handful in a small Tupperware gun, but with practice is very manageable. I took my G36 and added a heavier (19lb) tungsten spring and it handles +Ps very well, although I think my wife still has a small mark from the front sight hitting her in the forehead when she shot it (LOL).

Good luck on your hunt and once you get one, don't forget the is washer rack for it for easy cleaning :)

.45 acp

I prefer the "push" of my .45 over the snap of a 9mm or the pop of a .40 S&W

..they all kill if you hit what you're aiming at, so it all boils down to being comfortable

I would think you'd want to fire all three out of, essentially, the same gun to get the most accurate comparison, a CZ 75B in 9mm and 40 S&W and a CZ97B in .45 ACP for example.

Having said that I don’t notice any difference between my 75b in 40 S&W and my RIA 1911 in .45 ACP and both pistols are relatively equal in weight. I don’t notice any recoil at all in my S&W 6906 in 9mm.

That's odd..I find my Rock 1911 allows more consistent follow-up shots.. of course this could also be due to ergos.. so I guess regardless of caliber, comfort is what really matters. Nice to see another RIA owner..excellent 1911s ..sometimes I even feel like I'm an unofficial rep for them :D

What are you making your comparison to?

For me the Z fits my hand better. Since all my carry guns are DA/SA I’d never carry the RIA but I seem to be able to hit my follow ups w/ equal accuracy w/ either pistol.

Well I figured the OP was comparing the different calibers.. in which case it wouldn't matter if it was a CCW, a nightstand guardian, or a truck bed paperweight ;) ...but I was referring to my 24/7 Pro OSS in .45 ACP surprisingly...I know right? It has to be the way my 1911 just "feels right" to me I guess. And although I probably wouldn't want my 1911 IWB.. I still never go anywhere without it

I felt more snap with my 40 glock then I did with my full size 1911 in 45 I also agree I think gun weight has alot to do with it

Seems to me the thing to do is to shoot every model gun you are contemplating with each loading and find out for yourself. None of us know what guns you are talking about.
