i know this was probably answered in another post but can anyone tell me where i can find .38spl ammo both JHP and FMJ that is cheap and that is very reliable?

Just about anywhere that has ammo...Cabellas, Cheaper than Dirt, WalMart. 38spl is not an uncommon round. Remington, Lawman and Hornady are good ammo.

the walmart thats near me a box of 50 is $33.97 thats a little more then i can afford they have a box of 25-50 for 11.97 i think but their the rounds that mine hates and can pretty much only shoot remington and hornady and i know the one store i goto the hornady ammo is all but $30 a box for 25rds

check out Sportsman's Guide and Cheaper Than Dirt. They usually have some decent deals. Might be dirty ammo, but I don't think it ever hurt a gun to clean it. Another way to save some money, is to shoot over a five gallon bucket. When you shoot your 5,6, or whatever your revolver holds, dump the empties in the bucket. Save your empties until you have 500 or 1000. Find a classified section on an internet forum and sell them to someone who reloads. Use that money for future ammo purchases. But remember this. The brass you sell is brass. It isn't gold, keep your prices fair and don't charge what you see brass sell for new in the reloading isle at your local shooting supply store. You're doing the reloaders a favor to sell brass at a fair brass, and in turn they are doing you a favor by paying you for something that most people discard.. You're selling a product that you can't use, and they can. Remember too, that this is essentially free to you, especially if you are like many who don't keep your brass, and just discard it on the ground, range bucket, or give away. This is a product you can sell and ANYTHING you get for it, is just an amount deducted from your ammo bill.

Shoot straight!

Cheaperthandirt.com supplies BVAC bulk .38Spl at okay prices... I know they offer bulk FMJ, and I think they do LRN... I know they offer WC, SWC, HP by the box too...

can anyone tell me what a wad cutter round is and what its good for?

A simple answer is a bullet with a flat top that punches a perfect hole in a target. Used mostly for short range competitions and normally loaded to subsonic velocities. Makes scoring a target super easy.

so basically nothing good enough to be shooting the guy that breaks into the house in the middle of the night. its just for plinking

Pretty much, yes. The wad cutter is primarily used for target practicing as stated above and would not be a first choice when considering SD/HD ammo. Of course, it is better to have something than nothing at all. It will work until you can pick up some good JHP ammo.

OK that's what i thought i have JHP ammo but if I'm out at the range and stop for some food or something id rather know before hand if that would at least deter someone if i needed to draw my weapon and that's all i had in it.

My impression is that wadcutters were basically a standard round back in the day, but reloaders still use them for target and competition shooting, and some for defense. Also, in the 158 grain they exhibited ballistics that surpassed newer mfg rounds until recently. While they are flat nosed, reloaders do turn them around and make hollow points out of them.
I looked at them for my snub-nose, but I don't shoot lead rounds due to fouling of the barrel, and the current choice of .38 rounds offer comparable ballistics for whatever application is intended.
I'm not suggesting, but after some research looking at various brands and ballistics, including general prices, I chose Speer GD 135g short-barrel.
