I've wanted a 1911 in some shape form or fashion for the last 20 odd years. I dont want to mortgage 40 acres to buy one. All I see on the market are probably over priced. Any suggestions? Kinda wish Ruger would get on the 1911 bandwagon, itd be affordable and shoot great to boot.

While we obviously have wildly divergent opinions of Ruger, I would suggest you look into Armscor / Rock Island Armory 1911s. They are made in the Philippines and marketed here under both names. The one I own is marked Armscor, and it's a fine pistol.

Thanks ya'll,,, looked at some of them on Gunbroker,,reasonable,,and it is a 1911,,or close. Sad to say its not a Ruger. But I am not locked into one brand. I like what WORKS! :pleasantry:

Just keep your eyes open and tell EVERYONE you know what you're looking for. That's how I run across good deals. I picked up my Kimber Ultra CDP II, only 500 rounds through it, for $600 cash. I picked up a Kimber Ultra Carry II, one box of ammo through it, from a local police officer a few years back for $450.

Both the Kimbers I've had have ran perfect and are great guns. If you can find one in your price range you won't regret it!

Good luck and let us know when you get one!!

One of the best "bang for your buck" 1911's is the Taurus PT1911. Another great choice would be the GI Expert from Para.

The RIA is a good start into the 1911 world. I have several and they shoot very good. They shoot almost good as my Kimbers.

Those are GREAT deals on those 2 guns. I recently bought a NIB CDP Pro II and it was $1162 before tax!

I would love to have a Kimber (even though I have read some questionable stuff about them) but, alas, they are far above my price range. RIA's are in my price range. Mine shoots as well as or better than the Colts that I used when I fired on an Army pistol team some 37:no: years ago. I am very happy with my RIA. I can handle the price and can still afford to buy ammo to shoot in it. No problems with it so far. I am just as happy as if I had the "Cadillac-Kimber".

I have built my custom 1911 from the beginning base of a RIA 1911 for $425
Out of the box with a middle of the line trigger for 23 dollars it was shooting as well as my friends Kimber, and a plus it is all steel
which means a great base that gun is what made me want to be a gun smith.

I love my PT1911 AR, comes with Heinie Straight 8 sights and it shoots great! $615.00 out the door. It was a lot less than the Kimber Target II I got my mom, but I'm just as impressed with it

BIG +1 on the RIA

My gripe with Taurus 1911s is that they aren't mil-spec parts. You must buy Taurus parts for Taurus guns.

I've heard a lot of negative comments concerning the overall reliability of Taurus'.

Also, most agree that their CS is horrendous.

Wow, I've never had an issue... and everyone I know, or have ever talked to, who has had to send a gun back to Taurus has told me that they happy with how it all went. I have a PT145 as wel,l and I carry it...I've never had a jam in either Taurus or a problem, I'd buy another in a sec...

the only thing i suggest about the taurus being that they are series 80's, i would remove the firing pin stop and the rest of that garbage that can and may cause malfunctions. thats just my two cents.

Well, I guess you're one of the lucky ones. A guy either here or on another forum was talking about having to wait 6 months before Taurus told him that he'd need a new gun. And that was after spending a fortune shipping it to Brazil.

Another guy in that thread said that whenever he buys a Taurus, he just considers the inevitable repair to be part of the Taurus experience.

So congrats on getting a good one!

my 1911

I started with this
<a href="http://s43.photobucket.com/albums/e354/infntrysuicdekng/?action=view&current=armscor.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e354/infntrysuicdekng/armscor.jpg" border="0" alt="ria 1911"></a>

And I made it into this,
<a href="http://s43.photobucket.com/albums/e354/infntrysuicdekng/?action=view&current=100_0063.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e354/infntrysuicdekng/100_0063.jpg" border="0" alt="my 1911"></a>

<a href="http://s43.photobucket.com/albums/e354/infntrysuicdekng/?action=view&current=100_0064.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e354/infntrysuicdekng/100_0064.jpg" border="0" alt="my 1911 2"></a>

What do you guys think, see what a RIA 1911 can become

very nice! How would you feel about coaching someone thru a build like that. I've never fooled with pistols very much. Rifles are more to my taste.

I was in the same boat as you about 5 months ago, Rugerfan. I bit the proverbial bullet and bought a no frills Kimber Custom II and have not regretted it! It was indeed expensive, especially because I got it from a local shop instead of online but I have had NO problems out of it. I broke it in properly (the guys at the range were ridiculing me, but hey, I do things by the book when it comes to a $699 piece of hardware) by taking down the slide, wiping it, re-oiling it, and cleaning the barrel every 50 rounds for 500 rounds. I have put maybe 2,000 through it and I was impressed with the very first shot. I just can't say enough about my Kimber! Also it has the firing pin block and all that "malfunctioning" stuff. I can't really see the problem with it but it is all very easily removed if it ever becomes one... its just a spring fed bar under the slide with a small metal rod that pushes it up with the grip safety. Detail stripping a 1911 is so easy I learned how to do it in 10 minutes from watching a video on YouTube. It will really get you into 1911's as well as modifying them!

I am also one of those who were gipped by Taurus, both with a horrible factory out of the box pistol AND the nasty customer service. I will never stand by or recommend them again.

As for the RIA, my cousin recently got an officer's RIA and despite not shooting it, I did break it down and play with it and it seems to be a very solid 1911!
