10mm personal protection ammo

I am very new to conceal carry and I just got a Glock 29 10mm because I am an avid Bowhunter and wanted something for woods protection as well as something I could CC. Does anyone out there have any experience in this round for a CC round? One that is less likely to over penetrate and cause more trouble?

I have heard really great things about double tap Hardcast ammo for hunting applications but haven't found much for CC ammo.

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks.

Model 29 S&W will give you more protection in the sticks. Nothing like a 300gn plowing towards the assailant choose your poison. 10 mm very snappy.

Recently some idiot opined how bears are immune to large caliber bullets, but curl up and die from pepper spray.

Maybe you need OC spray instead of a 10mm!

You might want to consider a Lone Wolf 'conversion barrel'.
I do believe that Lone Wolf makes conversion barrels to be able to switch the stock 10 mm Glock into a .40 s&w caliber. Then you could use both the 10mm barrel when you are out hunting and then switch it to the .40 s&w conversion barrel for self defense purposes.

The Lone Wolf conversion barrels sell for around $120.00 bucks.

I carry a Glock 20,10mm as my favorite defensive firearm, especially in the winter. It is also my favorite firearm for woods carry. With the right ammo,it will do almost anything you need it to do. I usually carry 135gr Cor-Bons in it during the summer(when I am able to conceal it),and change over to 150gr in the winter for more penetration of heavier clothing worn then. According to test I've seen, neither round will exit the body. I've also viewed some test of the Double Tap Ammo on You Tube. It is very impressive, indeed. One video tested the 135gr,hp against a beef heart, placed behind some ribs, with a jug of gelaton in front, covered in several layers of cloth. The results were awesome. The bullet penetrated thru to the heart, totally destroying it,but not exiting the test media. I will be trying this ammo out in the near future.
Other companies also load 10mm ammo that is not much more powerful than the .40S&W. Or,as another poster stated, get an extra barrel from one of the companies that sell conversion barrells for the .40.

Great reply Wooddoctor.. the question wasn't which pistol he should have bought instead. I bowhunt in an area with a lot of wild hogs. I have been charged by a large boar in the dark. 10mm CorBon 200gr RNPN penetrating round stopped it. I've used my S&W model 29 Classic Deluxe too, but good luck with your hearing if you don't have time to get your earplugs in (which you usually don't if it is a self defense scenario ). Congratulations on your new Glock..

That's actually a very good idea

For a 10mm I prefer a HE107 shell, fuze quick and charge 7 whitebag. ymmv

I have been using the HPR stuff out of AZ. Its really solid stuff, custom ammo quality and wont break your pocketbook. Especially the hollow point.

Thanks for this info. I have thought of getting a conversion barrel for it but have mainly been looking at the 22lr conversion kits to get more comfortable with the gun. Do you remember what that video you watched on you tube was called? I tried to find it but didn't have much luck. There was a lot of people shooting chickens and hams though.

In the 10mm the 135 grain loads from Cor Bon,DoubleTap and Winchester SilverTip 175 grain are excellent choices for self defense purposes.I know many who shoot .40 out of the 10mm Glocks without a malfuntion. The 10mm is an excellent caliber capable of taking out bear with the proper ammunition.

I just typed in "Doubletap 10mm ammo test". There are several ammo test in the section. Some have comparisons of different ammo brands. Check as many as you can out, there is some awsome ammo out there.
BTW,the Cor-Bon 135gr are very controlable in my G20. Your 29 should be pretty easy to control as well, due to the double recoil spring. And,135gr,at 1450 FPS ain't no pipsqueak for defense.
As for the .40 S&W barrel,I have only been thinking of that for convenience,if I can't find 10mm ammo. I am also considering a .22 kit for mine.
You have a great gun in the G29,it will work well for you for a CCW/defensive firearm, and for a woods carry/defense gun. So much ammo out there for all purposes. Don't know if I would want to go against a grizzly with one,but since we don't have any of those in S.E. Georgia,I don't worry about it.

Do you use the Cor-bon for Conceal carry? I am really enjoying shooting the G29. It is not too bad for recoil and its gone "bang" every time I pull the trigger:)

I did just order a 22 conversion kit for it. It should be here wednesday and I am going to take it out this weekend. I am pretty excited about it. I was looking at the 40 conversion barrel for the convenience as well as I have read 10mm ammo is sometimes hard to find. I have had people that live in the same town I do that they wouldn't carry a 10mm in the woods because it is not big enough to take a grizzly but like you we don't have any in southern Oregon either. I think the 10mm is more than enough to deal with anything I will find in these woods.
Thank you very much for your input. It is nice coming from another Glock owner. I am very happy I bought one. I will let you know how the 22 kit works next week!

I use the Cor-Bon 135gr during the warmer times, and switch to 150gr in colder seasons. Both have plenty of velocity, and energy for defense, without over penetration.
If I"m going to spend some time "rambling around" in the woods,I'll stick a mag of 175gr Winchester Silvertips in it. That's the great thing about the 10mm,you have so much versality with it.

Looking forward to the results of both the .22 conversion, and the .40 swap.

I didn't think one could convert between 40 and 10mm due to case and overall lengths however between 357 sig and 40 will work

Have you considered Hornady Critical Defense? A little more power than the 40 but not so much as to worry about over penetration. Only available through Cabela's though. Buffalo Bore also offers some good ammo for defense against those pesky woods critters intent to make you their dinner. Btw, the 10mm is one of my carry guns as well and absolutely love that caliber.

I have considered the Hornady "Critical Defense",may give them a try.

Lone Wolf not only sells barrel conversions for the .40S^W,they also sell them for the .357Sig,and for the 9x25 Dillon. The 10mm is a very versatile caliber, and the Glock 20/29 are very versatile handguns. They can be "monster guns",or "mouse guns",or anything in between.

So I have been out 3 times now with the 22 conversion kit on my G29. The first time I went out I was using 36grn hollow point (all I had at the time) and it did not work very well at all. The next two times out I have used 40grn solids and it is fantastic!!!!! The barrel does fowl up with lead after about 250-300 rounds and it takes a bit to clean it out. I am going to look for some copper coated bullets to use next time. It is fairly accurate and a fantastic way to get used to the gun.
I highly recommend getting one. It is a fairly cheap way to put a lot of rounds through your gun and only takes a few seconds to change from my 10mm to the 22lr and back again.

The next step is getting the 40 conversion barrel.

Just another thought...MAC Ammo. It is a Michigan based company that I support. Nothing in the way of target ammo but for CC you might want to give them a try. Anyone who makes 10mm ammo I try to give my support to.
