Ralphie wasn't the only person who wanted a gun for Christmas. Turns out there's reason to think that quite a few people will be pulling a Glock from beneath their Christmas tree this year.

Gun sales have increased in Chico as well as throughout the United States since President-elect Barack Obama was chosen, and some employees at gun shops suspect a number of these guns are being purchased as Christmas gifts, Chico Enterprise-Record reported.

The increase in gun sales is due to the fear that Obama won't support the right to bear arms and will eventually ban some guns altogether.

During the week of Nov. 3, 2008 CNN reported that, according to FBI figures, the bureau received more than 374,000 requests for background checks on gun purchases, which was nearly a 49-percent increase over the same period in 2007.

However, this fear is formed on no solid basis.

First of all, a Politico news report states that Obama has been consistent in his support in common-sense gun laws, and will protect the right to purchase, own, transport and use guns for hunting and target practice.

Second, do people feel so unsafe that they need guns to protect themselves? It surprises me that stores such as the Tackle Box are selling out of firearms. Despite Chico's crime against persons rising from 13 percent to 16 percent in 2007, I don't think I need to purchase a gun to protect myself.

In a perfect world, guns wouldn't exist at all. In defending oneself, survival would be based on natural instincts, not the pull of a trigger.

Hunters need guns to shoot animals. Having a rifle or a shotgun for hunting makes sense. Having a handgun for hunting, on the other hand, does not. But even so, there isn't a reason to go hunting anymore. We don't hunt for food, just sport.

The only reason a person would buy a handgun is to shoot at people or a practice target, but what are they practicing for? If it's just a sport then they're probably not planning to put that skill to use.

What's even more pointless is stressing over gun rights. People hear rumors about gun rights being taken away and then hear about an increase in gun sales and automatically assume Obama is going to make an attack on gun owners.

The truth of the matter is that Obama supports the Second Amendment in protecting individual gun rights, so there is no need to go out and buy them. With a plummeting economy, gun legislation isn't a high priority.

According to a CNN report, Obama has been clear that his focus is on the economy, the growth of jobs, dealing with the health care crisis and our dependence on foreign oil and not on gun control.

The only thing people should stress about now is the increase of crime rates and gun deaths because of the increase of gun sales.

In a 2004 report from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, an average of about 81 people died every day from gunfire in the U.S. This was the most recent year for which figures were available, but four years later and an increase in gun sales - I can only imagine the damage that'll be done.

I don't like guns and think they only lead to trouble. I've survived 21 years without one, 18 of those years spent in Chico, so there's no need to get one. I think gun owners are exaggerating, but I understand that buying a gun is an American's right.

All I ask is, if there's a desire to get one, leave the Obama-hoopla out of it. And please don't give your friends and family a gun for Christmas. C'mon now, they'll shoot their eye out.

Here's my reply to Kelley:

Kelley -

This piece was meant to be humorous, right? Or, at least, sarcastic. Do you even know about the Brady Center? Have you even been watching the news about the Heller case and the Supreme Court? And do you know about the now-Democratic- biased Congress and Senate, and Obama's stand on gun control? I guess you do, as you so naively stated, "First of all, a Politico news report states that Obama has been consistent in his support in common-sense gun laws, and will protect the right to purchase, own, transport and use guns for hunting and target practice." Where is the self-defense part? Oh, right, it isn't there. Do you think that might be the reason why so many people are purchasing guns. And not 30-06 hunting rifles, but self-defense weapons, like pistols, revolvers, and semi-automatic rifles. And you can also add that a lot of these same people are now applying for concealed weapons (carry) permits. Kinda makes a moot point of your "hunting and target practice" rules, doesn't it?

And then you so blithely state, "Second, do people feel so unsafe that they need guns to protect themselves? It surprises me that stores such as the Tackle Box are selling out of firearms. Despite Chico's crime against persons rising from 13 percent to 16 percent in 2007, I don't think I need to purchase a gun to protect myself." Good for you, but please don't speak for the rest of us, nor claim to be "holier than thou." A home invasion in my neighborhood just this last week-end was foiled when one of the victims shot one of the assailants. Didn't read about that in your Chico Times rag, did you? I can give you several links to news where robbers, rapists, and burglars have been shot and/or killed by citizens who happened to believe that they had the right to defend themselves.

Obama supporting the 2nd Amendment is a relative statement, just like the Brady Center supporting the 2nd Amendment. If you are in the National Guard, a cop, or some other law enforcement person, it's okay to own a gun for self-defense, but for us "common folk," it's a no-no. Well, let me refresh you on the wording of the 2nd Amendment (it's really quite short and succinct): A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. Now, a lot of you only see the first part, about a well-regulated militia, but it is the 2nd part that is most important: "...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." It doesn't say, the right of the militia, the right of the state, the right of the government..it says the right of the people, and that is all of us, every man, woman, and even responsible child. We all have the right to keep and bear arms.

But reading your entire article, it is evident that you are one of those "anti-gun" people who could not write an objective piece. You don't like guns, you don't like hunting, and you think that guns kill people ("The only thing people should stress about now is the increase of crime rates and gun deaths because of the increase of gun sales."). If our laws were enforced, and those committing crimes with weapons (which were most likely obtained illegally) were prosecuted, there would be a decrease in gun-related deaths. And when you factor in that some of those gun deaths are criminals being killed by citizens defending themselves, it all works out, doesn't it? In any case, your opinions are your own. If you don't like guns, if you don't feel like you need a gun for self-defense, if you feel that crime in Chico is manageable, if you think that crime will never touch you, then have at it. But don't try to make that decision for the rest of us. The 2nd Amendment has been attacked for some time now, and there is a good reason to believe that, with the socialist government now in place, it will be weakened to the point of uselessness. We ARE worried about losing our right to self-defense.

And remember, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away. In this day and age of increased crime, I hope that your faith in your police department is well-founded. A few days ago, a woman was stabbed to death while calling 9-1-1, and it took the cops 48 minutes to respond - her boyfriend found her body first.

Have a nice day!

No I don't think so. She is 21 and a product of the liberal school system. Truth wouldn't register to her no matter what the facts are. This is what we have to contend with for a few decades. Brainwashed, tolerant-less, mindless, knee jerked decisions and opinions.

Personally, i hunt deer not for the sport but for the meat. I have mine processed into cube steak, hamburger and sausage. This does help cutdown some on my grocery bill thus saving money in these tough economic times.

ummm... bull freakin crap!!!! all one has to do is take a look at his voting record when it comes to firearms. get a freakin clue!

The author is right about ONE thing though;

"Turns out there's reason to think that quite a few people will be pulling a Glock from beneath their Christmas tree this year".

I believe the above statement to be true. For a week now I have been trying to buy a Glock 19. I am selling my Taurus and want to replace it with a G19. I cannot find one anywhere! Even the online vendors are out of stock!

I will continue to stockpile firearms and ammunition. We already know what happened over in England - it was bad enough to lift the ban on firearms.

Might check Academy Sports if there is one in your area. While not the absolute cheapest they tend to have lots in stock.

A very nice, reasoned, intelligent response to a pretty nonsensical article.

Kelley, poor thing, is, dare I say?.. an idiot. How many such "useful idiots" applauded the confiscatory gun policies of history's tyrants? Saddam, Adolf, Joe, Pol, Mao, et al all applaud her.

I don't put too much currency on what she says. This is a woman who's complaining about having to pay approx. $17/mo for "feminine products". Don't understand how she can demand "free tampons". Clearly a woman with no clue.

This article would be comical if she weren't dead serious. Oh well, as long as all she does is dislike guns and doesn't try to actively support causes that would take my guns away, I feel safe just ignoring her.

Yeah I already checked with those guys. They have one left for their display! They don't do LE discount either!

After reading her garbage it is becoming more and more apparent that stupidity is a national epidemic.

I work in a correctional center for chronic offenders. I took a pole the other day while myself and the inmates were discussing the current political nightmare that this country faces. I asked them "how many of you are going to give up your guns as those of us who carry legaly may be required to by the new administration?"
There reply was "none of us."
Need I say more

Scary isn't it? Its so true tho! None of them will. We shouldn't have to either

Stupid question, I know, but how would these guys be asked to give up their guns when no one knows they have them? These guys do not go into a gun shop, buy a weapon, plunk down their ID card and wait for 3-7-10 days to pick up their piece. They steal the weapons or obtain them from others who do, or who buy them on the black market.

Kinda like saying, "Now I know that a lot of you guys out there have illegal drugs in your pockets, so I'm asking that you be honest, come forward, take the drugs out and hand them over to us so no one is doing anything illegal."

Like the bumper sticker says, "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns!" I like mine better - "When guns are outlawed, I will be an outlaw!"
