FORT WORTH, Texas -- Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport is one of seven U.S. airports that allows firearms up to the security checkpoints, according to an Associated Press survey.

Flying in the U.S. has been transformed since Sept. 11, with passengers forced to remove their shoes, take out their laptop computers and put liquids and gels in clear plastic bags.

An AP survey of the 20 busiest U.S. airports found that seven of them -- DFW, Philadelphia, Detroit, Phoenix, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Los Angeles and San Francisco -- let people with gun permits carry firearms in the general public areas of the terminal.

"Here in the state of Texas, citizens have the right to have a concealed weapon," DFW Airport spokesman David Magana said. "It's been a law on the books for many years."

Some anti-terrorism experts say it is a glaring security loophole that could endanger airport workers, passengers and people waiting to pick them up or see them off. Some suggest that allowing guns in terminals is practically asking for them to be smuggled aboard a plane.

"If your airport is not secure, then the security of your airplanes is jeopardized," said Rafi Ron, former security chief at Ben Gurion Airport in Israel, who now works as an aviation consultant. "You cannot separate the two."

Other authorities say the nonsecure areas of the terminal are no different from other public venues and do not warrant special restrictions.

"It's really not more of a concern than at a mall or a train station," said Philadelphia police Lt. Louis Liberati.

Under federal law, it is illegal everywhere to try to carry a gun through a security checkpoint. The rest of the terminal, however, has long been the domain of state and local authorities.

"We would rather that people didn't come to the airport with a loaded weapon, concealing a weapon, what have you, but it is the law of the state; it's the law of the land," Magana said.

Jon Allen, a spokesman for the federal Transportation Security Administration, said the TSA has not taken a position on guns in airports and has no authority under federal law to ban them.

Neil Behgooy a traveler at DFW, said he doesn't think guns should be allowed at airports.

"It's irresponsible to allow citizens to have firearms within airport boundaries," he said.

In order to legally carry a concealed weapon, gun owners in Texas must take a class and undergo a background check.

Security officials at DFW said they stop someone going through security who forgot they were carrying a weapon about once a week.

It amuses me how antis believe that people who have submitted to fingerprinting and background checks are people we should be afraid of.

Amen on that, heck when I went to pick up my daughter at the airport I had my HK, two spare mags, pepper spray, tactual folder, and rail light / laser on me. Outside the secured areas you are good to go in Mi.

Keep in mind you're not good to go in AR, FL, ND, NV (concealed only prohibited), OH, OK and VA. Those shall issue States have airports specifically as prohibited areas.
