Pre-School meet and greet.

Our son is going to pre-school in a few days and in a few hours we have a meet and greet. I have my permit just trying to decide if I should open carry. Most other places I would carry no question even if there where signs saying other wise. But I guess I am just a bit nervous to carry in a school even though its legal for me to do so.

I would conceal the gun at the preschool.

If you felt that the deterrent value of the firearm was vitally important at the preschool, would you leave your child there everyday with no protection?

What is your goal for carrying? If it's self-defense, then if you honestly feel the need to open carry there, you probably shouldn't be leaving your kid there.

If it's "intimidation", are you honestly the kind of person who wants to intimidate your kid's teacher?

Finally, where do you live? Is open carry very common there? If so, go ahead! If you live somewhere that open carrying will get the police called on you, you probably shouldn't. These are people you're leaving your kid with. I wouldn't want to freak them out on the first day. (Who knows, they might just choose to refuse to allow your child in to their program - I hope you have alternate daytime plans available if that is the case.)

Is open carry more important than common courtesy? I would love it if open carry were accepted everywhere, but it's not. Until it is, show self-restraint when warranted. (Then again, I'd also accept a complete ban on all guns, if the government could *PROVE* that *ALL* guns are gone, from *EVERYONE*, including the police. Which, of course, isn't going to happen.)

I would not open carry in this situation. Your actions are too easily misunderstood and may cause unnecessary controversy for you and your child.

I carry 80% for defense 20% for public awareness. Its kinda funny to me that you had Defense and intimidate like that was the only reason to carry. If you carry a side arm to be intimidating then I think you should rethink why you carry Ed Hurtley.

I see no benefit to OC in this situation. I do see several possible negatives.

-Will your actions cause other parents to remove their children?
-Will the pre-school decline your child admittance?
-Is there a firearm policy for the pre-school, or may your actions cause one to be created?

Just because we have the right does not mean it is always wise to exercise it.

I would sacrifice the 20% public awareness in this case. If you want to know about any preschool firearms policies/attitudes, ask them what instruction they provide in the area of firearms safety.

Around here, people who open carry tend to do so solely for intimidation factor. Hence I have a bit of a prejudice against people who open carry here. The fact that you stated "I would carry no question even if there where signs saying other wise." made you come across as one of those types.

If it were more common, I would fully agree with the 20% education factor. I just know that here it would just bring down negative attention. Where I went to college (rural Northern Arizona,) where open carry was much more common, I would have open carried.

You may find you and your child are dismissed from the school. A private preschool has no requirement to allow your child to attend. C'mon, this is where you guys lose my support. You know this will scare people. In some states a private pre-school is governed by state education law and qualifies as a school. Just leave the damn thing in the car.

Just leave the damn thing in the car.

Unless it is prohibited by state law, I must ask WHY?!?

Do you leave your gun in the car because some poeple MIGHT be scared of a gun?

It seems to me like carrying the gun concealed would be a much more rational option rather than leaveing the gun in the car based upon the supposition that some people might be scared of a responsible parent. Why is it that we must be so scared of people scared of guns?

My better judgement would say this is a concealed carry moment. The kids may think it's cool but the mind set of most teachers I know lean way to the left and that doesn't include a fondness for 2A.

Most states its illeagal to carry any kind weapon where children are. Check the laws first. I think open carry is kind of foolish at a pre school.

Navy, how are you?

Yes, concealed works for me. But to OC at a daycare center is to incite problems. If I own the daycare center I must worry about revenue first. If a parent regtularly OC's into the preschool it could cause some parents to be uncomfortable and pull their kids out. I would ask that parent not to show a gun in the school. Plus there's the whole legality issue in some states.

Most states its illegal to carry any kind weapon where children are. Check the laws first. I think open carry is kind of foolish at a pre school.
??????????? Does that mean I can't carry at restaurants, grocery stores, fairs, zoos, banks, coffee shops, and barber shops? If that is true I should be in jail. I OC with my kids everywhere I go. I'm glad I'm in WA with NavyLCDR. If I couldn't carry a weapon around children I would be housebound. Oh wait, I couldn't even live in my house because of the kids there. I know, since I'm not currently working I will start a pre-school that requires parents to carry. Sorry, but my sarcasm always gets to me.

Is preschool always considered the same as daycare? I know in Washington state, the state requires daycare centers to ban firearms in order to maintain their license. It's not illegal to carry/possess a firearm in a daycare center in WA, but the operators of the daycare won't get/renew their license unless they ban firearms on their private property. Is there a legal difference, in any state, between a daycare center and a preschool? I inherited my stepdaughter when she was 12, so I bypassed the whole daycare/preschool situation, except that her mom did operate a licensed daycare, that's how I know about the Washington Administrative Code.

Also, in Washington state, in reference to citadel45acp's statement.... ex-Mayor Nickels of Seattle tried to ban firearms in parks and recreation centers "for the sake of the children." A Washington court nullified his ban as illegal, violating state preemption law, and gave them 30 days to remove their signs.

Back to your original question, I am with others here for you to CC in pre-school. It will save a lot of questions and explanations from ignorant people who doesn't know any better.

So I ended up carrying despite your warnings. And guess what. Nothing happen. I don't know why you guys say things like Don't use your rights and They will kick your child out. Perhaps you guys are from CA or some other socialist state. In my state I am approved by law to carry. No problem Ed Hurtley No hard feelings. Utah is a bit different and I think I will tend to stick around UCC/ more. At least people their are not stuck on being Dirty harry. I carry openly because it is my right. I carry Openly because it there is nothing wrong with it.
